Standard Club or Union League Club

Hello,

I am travelling to Chicago and was given a choice to dine at the Standard Club or the Union League Club, which one would you recommend more?

As between the two, Standard Club has the better food (at least based on their lunch offerings).

No, but still ironic given its Jewish origin.

I've never eaten at the Union League Club, but I can tell you that the food at the Standard Club is excellent for a country club circa 1975. It's not so much a place to eat as it is a place for a business meeting or large social event where food is absolutely acceptable, but takes a back seat.

I got married at the Standard Club last year and the food was outstanding, far better than "absolutely acceptable". I told them upfront that I did not want "wedding food" at my wedding and they came through with flying colors. I've also attended several brunches there that have been fantastic. I think you're selling them a bit short.

My experience has been mostly at the holiday buffets (which paradoxically and to my amusement included sliced ham and shrimp platters). As I said, the style of food was pleasant albeit a little outdated, but, imho, in no way outstanding.

Glad to hear your wedding went well and you enjoyed the food there.

What's wrong with shrimp and ham? The Standard Club makes no claim of being kosher.

<<What's wrong with shrimp and ham? >>

Not a thing. I enjoy them both. I was just surprised to see them at the Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast.

Our table's reaction was that the kitchen staff was perhaps "unclear on the concept."
