Vancouver Early Bird Prix Fixe

smel Jul 21, 2008 06:37 PM

I'm always willing to shell an extra few bucks for a great meal. From chic fine dining, to casual, yet precisely executed cuisine, to the unique, innovative dining experience, I love it all. It's been my quest to eat all over town so I feel I have a pretty good grasp of where to go, depending on the occasion.

However.

The new guy I'm seeing does not have the same appreciation for food as I do. In fact, we're likely opposites. (Granted, he goes to Nando's Chicken every week... ugh and enjoys Cactus Club.) I've exposed him to the finer side of cuisine and he's beginning to understand my passion. Still, he's not as willing to spend money on a nice meal as I am because he doesn't have full appreciation for what goes into food.
Yet.

My new strategy is to expose him to more restaurants via the Early Bird Prix Fixe route. Sure, there's a very limited selection and we finish dinner before movies start playing but I think it's worth the compromise. So far, I've only tried the one at Raincity Grill and it was pretty decent. He enjoyed it as well. I see there's also one offered at Gastropod.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

I had the prix fixe at Chow ($38) a couple of months ago. Excellent.

West used to have a prix fixe menu btwn 5:30 and 6:00pm, but it was on the pricier side (btwn $45-50), if I remember correctly. Bistro Pastis used to have a prix fixe offering, too.

West still has the early bird prix fixe, according to their website. I had it a while back, and thought it was decent at $50 per. Not good enough to go back for their regular menu though.

Gastropod has one as well but it does have time and date restrictions. Others without a restriction are Jules and Pied a Terre. I've had the prix fixe option at both places and it's never a let down. If I were to pick, it would be Pied a Terre.

This month they are celebrating their anniversary so they are doing "faves thru the years"
Other than July usually it changes every week thru out the summer.

Do you know if they are bringing back their kobe beef burger? I had it there a couple of years ago, and it is still haunting me... doomed to seek out inferior clones elsewhere.

Jeff ( the Chef/owner) rotates favourites back in fairly often. best bet, email and tell him how much you loved it and ask if he'll bring it back. He's usually pretty cool like that.
