I go to bars for good beer or cocktails, not for food, but I have two favorites in Calgary. The first is in the Beltline neighborhood south of the main downtown core. It's called the Hop In Brew. They have pizza and quesadillas which are good, but the beer selection and ambience keeps me coming back. The Hop is in an old house in a fairly seedy (though gentrifying) area of town, but they have a ton of beers on tap that you can't get elsewhere in town (Alley Kat from Edmonton, Affligem from Belgium, some special offerings from Big Rock and my fave Calgary brewer Wild Rose). The Hop is located at 213 - 12th Avenue S.W.
Speaking of Wild Rose, their brewpub is an excellent spot for a cold beer following an afternoon of navigating the Calgary Farmers' Market (it's about 100 m west of CFM in a Quonset hut). All of the beer is great though I highly, highly recommend the Wred Wheat if it's hot out and the Alberta Crude stout if it's not so hot out. You can only get those at the brewpub or at a few select bars (see the Hop above) unlike their other offerings which are offered in bottles at liquor stores as well as in draught. The food there is reasonably priced (everything is under $10). I usually get the chips and dip or if I'm looking for a meal, the chili or whatever is on special. It's hard to beat their patio... I know I'm there after most of my shifts at the market! Wild Rose is at Bldg AF23, #2 - 4580 Quesnay Wood Drive SW.

Too many to list here and everybody has a fave- just in my area are 1410 Bier Haus (google for website) and a new one at 14 St and 16 Ave SW called Balance that has been getting good press. Both have (or are reputed to have as I have not been to Balance) above-average pub food. 1410 has, in particular, excellent pizzas.

definitely not your typical pub fare! I have to check this place out...

re: John Manzo
The food at Balance was indeed very good! I recommend that everyone check it out soon, as I can't see it surviving for much more than a year, sadly...It seems to have a bit of an identity crisis -- it looks upscale enough, but alternates between top 40 and electronica a bit too loudly, as well as constantly shows sports highlights.
