coming to San Fran ..epicurious on a budget
I am coming to San francisco aug 6-17 I was wondering If there are any great food places for cheap as I am on a college budget but I do have quite the epicurious bug so all kinds of food will do. I was also wondering what bars had the best happy hours for drinks and food Thanks..
Where are you staying and will you have access to transportation? There are cheaper eats in SF but some of it depends on how far you are willing/able to travel. Also helps if you clarify what cheap means to you - some people cheap is under 10 others it means under 20, etc.
Off the top of my head here are some places that I go to when I'm watching my pennies:
Papalotte's (Mission District) - California Mexican in a funky environment. Love the salsa.
Pluto's - I'm not a big fan of theirs but some people I know love it. I think they probably have good salads but I don't eat salads out so it kills the experience for me.
Squat & Gobble - Portions are good and I went to the one on West Portal and it was not too packed which I understand the other venues get very busy.
Chow - I like the one on Church and Market. It is very busy but worth the wait. I like their pastas. They also have entree size and small size so you can order depending on your appetite.
Home - I used to love this place but I have to admit I haven't eaten there since they changed chefs. They do an early bird dinner which I can't comment on but the website says "Everyday, from 5 pm to 6 pm includes a 3-course prix fix menu & glass of wine."
Barney's - typical burgers and salads. I used to eat here a lot with my son. Several locations.
Mel's Diner - typical diner food but good portions. Several locations.
Hope that helps.

You might keep an eye on this link to see if this $14 all you can eat bbq with one free beer is good.
Since you will be in town on Wednesday and Saturday, you might stop by the Wednesday Civic Center farmers market and definately the Saturday morning Ferry Plaza Farmers market. Lots of food vendors and free samples.
Here's a few $10 and under options
Replace the search with ... SF moderate ... and there will be places generally in the $10 - $20 range.
