Flushing - need Taiwanese rec?
I know this is probably one of those on-going themes on this board, but what do you think are the best taiwanese joints in Flushing these days? (dish recs would be great too?)
I've eaten at a decent amt of the taiwanese joints in Flushing, but its been a while since ive been to any of them and things always change. I'm going to Flushing at least once this week and one of my friends wants taiwanese (she's taiwanese)
off the top of my head I thought of:
- Gu Xiang
- King Five
- Main St Imperial (Bei Gang)
- Yi Jia
- Red Chopstick
- that place on the far right side of the flushing mall

This is a great place for breakfast. I think they open at 9am on weekends and 9:30am on weekdays. Both times till 2pm. I strongly recommend the salty tofu soup (don't get confused by ordering salty tofu curds). I think this place has the best salty tofu soup in NY. Its the first picture from the top in the link.

re: Lau
Its btw Main and Prince, more closer to the middle of the block across the street from the casino buses.
I usally get the open mouth fried dumplings or the soup dumplings. The fan tuan (rice rolls) are popular. I see many people order it. I just find all the other stuff on the menu to be passable. Don't get me wrong I'll eat anything on the breakfast menu over bacon and eggs any day. Its still one my my favorite options for breakfast.
The used to have a good red cooked beef with noodles, but the last time I had it they were in a period of cutting back on quality. It was on a donwhill. They even cut back on quality on the open mouth dumplings by using more veggies than pork. People started complaining, and they settled on raising prices and getting back to quality. I think its still pretty cheap and a great bargain. The open mouth dumplings are better but I never had the red cooked beef with noodles since then (its not on the breakfast menu and you have to till some cook comes in). But don't get too concerned about that dish.
I only been here for dinner when it first opened many years ago. So I don't think my review will have much merit as it would be outdated.
For me the star is the salty tofu soup for breakfast. I've ordered it everytime except last weekend and got the salty tofu curds which I regretted. Its not bad but I prefer the former more.

ended up eating at gu xiang again...here's my report:
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/525099btw is anyone familiar with this small taiwanese place by xiao la jiao (little pepper)? its on roosevelt bet prince and the back entrance of the ocean jewels parking lot; if you're facing xiao la jiao, its to the right of it on the surface level. It said something taiwanese eats i think in english, i didn't know enough of the characters to properly read the chinese...never noticed it before although it didn't look new, looked kind of run down, which can usually mean its worth checking out haha

I can't remember the name but there is a great place all the way down Main Street a block before the LIE service road between 59th and 60th Aves. It is on the block with the "Chinatown Ice Cream Factory" knock-off. They had very authentic Taiwanese food down that end of Flushing, much more so then The Roosevelt area (though I think Gu Siang is pretty good). I had the most delicious Bamboo chicken. My finicky toddler (who eats next to nothing) cried for more everytime she finished her piece. We ended up ordering an extra one to go so she could have it for lunch the next day.
Gosh, I just can't remeber the name...I'm sorry but that end of Flushing is defintely worth exploring.›1 Reply
