Rome restaurants in August - Help!

We will be traveling to Rome from Aug. 28-Sept. 1. Unfortunately almost all of the restaurants I wanted to visit appear to be closed during this period.

It seems like Il Convivio will be open, but can anyone recommend other excellent restaurants that will be open?

  1. I was in a semi-similar situation last summer (search my old posts for a few hopefuls). I basically just got on the phone, and kept going through a lengthy list until I found places that were open. I know it seems ridiculous, but it was far better than making our way on foot only to find that the doors were closed. I am sure you will find wonderful food, just do make sure you do your planning now (as it seems that you are doing, so you will be fine).

    1. Fred Plotkin's Italy for the Gourmet Traveler (recently updated) has been very reliable in my experience in listing when restaurants are closed. Likewise, the Michelin Red Guide for Italia.

I don't know if you've ever been to Roma, but it's also my experience from many trips there that - maybe especially in August -- knowing the best restaurants near your hotel is an enjoyable way to approach evening dining. If you plan to be doing sightseeing, knowing restaurants very near the places you plan to be around lunchtime is an asset.

Plotkin lists his restos by neighborhood as I recall, and Michelin includes maps. Both books are too big to tote around, so just xerox the Roman pages for your suitcase. Hope that helps.
