Laziz - Indian in Clearwater

I haven't eaten many Indian meals since moving to Tampa Bay. I had only been to India Grill in St. Pete once and I had the lunch buffet. I thought it wasn't anything special and I had all but forgotten about Indian food...

By circumstance, I saw mixed reviews for Laziz online and none of them were really up to date. So I decided that I would try it for myself and see. I couldn't be happier with my decision. I got there just after noon on Sunday and I was the first customer. The place is small, so during peak hours I would imagine it being a bit crowded. It is located in a strip mall, but do not let that dissuade you from going.

I started with the vegetable samosa after I was informed that the pakora was only available for dinner. It was a rather large appetizer for one, but would do well for a couple. It had a nice crispy bite with a moist interior but what really made it stand out was the two sauces that came with it. The first was sweet and tangy and I wasn't crazy about it, but the second one was exquisite. It was spicy made with green peppers, hot peppers, cilantro and coconut powder. It really made the samosa come to life.

I followed up with an entree of chicken vindaloo. I asked for it to be made hot and it didn't disappoint. I'm used to eating spicy food so it wasn't overbearing, but if your taste buds aren't accustomed to it you may want to order it medium. The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked. The spices played together to create a sophisticated taste. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Half way through my meal, an Indian couple came in to dine. It was pleasantly reassuring to see them patronizing Laziz, considering the mixed reviews I had read. The portions are generous, so as a lone diner I took my left over goodies home. My co-diners ordered one entree which they split; I would recommend this approach unless you want to taste a few of the many dishes they have to offer.

I am certainly no expert on Indian cuisine, so I ask you Chowhounders what was your experiences at Laziz? What dishes do you recommend? Tandoori Girl, I have relied on your posts in the past and based on your name I suspect you know a thing or two on this topic. :-)

I will definitely be returning to Laziz.

So happy you love Laziz! it's one of my faves here in Florida. I'm a bit of a food snob, and have been disappointed in the local haunts since moving here from NY. I was so pleased with Laziz that I must admit it's better than some of my favorite Indian places in NY.

We love our "usuals" so much that we rarely look at the menu. Vegetable Pakora, Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Tikka Masala (on the spicy side), garlic Naan and plain Naan, and a couple of bottles of Taj Mahal beer. It just doesn't get any better. :)
