Avec ?

Dear all

I posted last year seeking recs for a three day stay on a Mo/Tue / Wed and loved the city so much we are now coming back for a weekend early next month. We were recommended to try Avec but never did...

So did we truly miss out on something special ? ( we are two guys in our late 30's/early 40's one veggie one not if that is relevant in any way )...I have seen some posts this year questionning how good this place is, has it gone downhill at all ? - or are they misconceived ?

And .. if not Avec then where should we be going for a quintessential chicago experience regardless of cuisine ?

Also.. where is best for post game pizza or a microbrew and something good to eat after a ballgame ( White Sox not Cubs ) if staying in centre of town ? Stay near ballpark, scoot back into the centre or stop off somwhere on the way that we would otherwise miss?

And finally, what is best neighbourhood for great choice of non frat boy bars all in close walking distance of each other -with late late opening for a Friday or Saturday nght - if any are within walking distance of what I would call the Wilco buliding in centre of town, so much the better !

Thanks in advance for any help you can give...

  1. Avec is great, I love it and highly recommend you go. A vegetarian will do fine there. I wouldn't call it quintessential Chicago, however.

When you say Wilco building, I'm sorry - no idea. Can you give an address?

For a bunch of bars all right next to each other, I'd recommend Division between Ashland and Damen. Most have outdoor seating, which is lovely. Most of these places serve food as well. If you want a more "bar" feeling, try Danny's, Lemmings, Quenchers and Map Room in Bucktown (not exactly close to each other, but definitely walking distance).

Post-Sox pizza you can definitely go to somewhere on Taylor Street (or that area). That's between Sox park and the loop, you can hop off the Red line El, have your dinner, and get back on the El for the ride back to the loop.

    1951 W Dickens Ave, Chicago, IL 60614

    The Map Room
    1949 N Hoyne Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

    Lemmings On Damen
    1850 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

    2401 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

    1. I bet the Wilco building are the towers on the cover of the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album, right? The corn cobs? Marina City? 300 N. State? It's closer to downtown touristy stuff. I'd go with the above recommendation for bars and stay away from downtown.

Rubinow is right re the Wilco building description. So, what is the quintessential Chicago dining experience and which are the best places for pizza near the W. Sox ground ?
