Skip Cupcakes and drive to Seattle's Trophy Cupcakes

toutefrite Jul 19, 2008 09:49 PM

Seriously, it's worth the three hour drive to make it to Trophy Cupcakes. I had a Cupcakes sampling last week and was bitterly disappointed. First off, the neon hues were off-putting. Since when are lemons the color of nuclear turmeric? Artificial colors serve a purpose, but they were maligned in this case. The flavors were flat.

And then one week later to Trophy Cupcakes, and let me just say that it is worth the hype. The best cupcakes I have had. The chocolate and vanilla cakes were equally moist and flavorful, reminding one that brown can actually taste like chocolate, instead of just like "brown". I won't go on, but I just couldn't get over the comparison between the two, and at the same price point, it's just criminal.

Do they make minis too? Or just the full-size? Will be there next week and can't wait!

I didn't see any mini's. I'll be writing it up soon - but haven't had a chance yet.

After double checking my photos, there are mini cupcakes!

Nuclear turmeric is the best description I have ever heard of for that icing!!

Crave here in Calgary is pretty tasty, but I can't say I would ever go out of my way for a cupcake. I guess I'll avoid Cupcakes in Van.

No idea how they would compare to Sprinkles, Crave or Trophy but Butter on Dunbar is a bit closer :-) and I thought their cupcakes were pretty good when I had them on a house tour last summer. They were offered in the petite, 2 bite size although that may only have been for this event. As the name suggests there seemed to be a lot of butter in the icing which for me is a good thing.

Thanks toutefrite, I'm in Seattle tomorrow so I'll check it out.

Then will be back in Calgary pretty quick, so I'll try to make it to Crave for a refreshed review. It's been awhile since I've been to Crave, but nothing I drive across town for.

Keeping this in Western Canada- you know, the board- skip that awful crisco-frosted Cupcakes and come to Calgary for Crave. No contest.

Hoping that Crave or Sprinkles opens a location here in Vancouver. (I'm not a cupcake fan generally speaking, but Sprinkles rocks. I haven't been to Crave).

I had cupcakes from Cupcakes the other day - I thought I was going to go into a diabetic coma. Way too sweet and artificial tasting - like Betty Crocker frosting on Betty Crocker cake mix cakes.

You like Sprinkles huh? That kind of endorsement from a non cupcake fan is rather motivating. Will be in LA soon, and will head down there. Yes, the Cupcakes are terrible, loved your imagery.

I should also add that I'm not a huge cupcake fan. My girlfriend loves cupcakes, and Sprinkles is her fave so far, especially the strawberry.

Actually I'm pretty sure that expansion to BC is on the radar for the Crave sisters, but don't quote me.

I finally had a chance to try Crave a couple of weeks ago, and I wish I had bought more. They need to come to Edmonton first so that I don't have to drive down just to get a cupcake fix.

I tried Cupcakes twice. Once with my girlfriend, and another time some guests brought some back home. Both times, they were plain and boring. I have no desire to go back.

My favorite cupcakes are from Sprinkles in Beverly Hills. I believe they opened (or are planning to open one) in Palo Alto. Something to look forward to when I return to the Bay Area.

I have been thinking for quite some time that Cupcakes (there is one in Edmonton too - where I live) is far overrated. I went to the one on W Broadway in Van not so long ago. Poor selection, poor service, very little seating, and all of them I tried tasted the same. Cake tasted like it was from a mix and I didn't get much butter taste in the buttercream. Thanks for the advice - is Trophy a chain? Or just in Seattle?

Trophy is an independent bakery, wtih only one location in Seattle. Three hours from Vancouver isn't at all unreasonable to me for a good cupcake. ;) The twelve hour drive to Calgary for Crave isn't quite as reasonable. Their cupcakes are good, but Trophy's are better. I hate the colors of Crave icing. Too artificial, but the texture of cake and frosting are both nice.
