Best Restaurant American (new) in the South Bay
Okay, Catalina Restaurant may not be the undisputed champion of the south bay, but it is by far, one of my favorites. For foodies looking for a decent restaurant in the south bay, look no further.
I like it better than Darren's, Brix, and other older places as well (Bora Bora, Reeds, Cafe Pierre, Towne, Petros, etc)
It reminds me a lot of Lucques in Los Angeles, just cheaper, friendlier, more casual, but not quite as polished (but close).
This place has been open for about 4 months now, but hasn't gotten the attention it deserves IMHO.
The menu is seasonal.
Their appetizers are their strongest point, just like lucques.
Their scallops are amazingly cooked. They are perfectly seasoned, perfectly seared, perfectly complimented, and not overcooked (like most places seem to cook it). Their braised short ribs are also one of my favorite entrees there. All of their desserts are quite good, although not michelin star pasty chef good. My recommendation is to share 2 apps, 1-2 desserts, and one main course! You won't go wrong.
If you live in the beach cities/south bay, but haven't checked this place out, you should.
Quality places don't last long in redondo beach, so hopefully it catches on.

I challenge your opinion for best new restaurant in the southbay. Try Brix@1601 in Hermosa. Chef Michael McDonald was amazing when he was at the Dakota...and with more creative control here, I think he is even better.
