Just came back from lunch at El Patio, Rt.1 in Jessup. I disagree with most posts here. Service was friendly, but VERY slow (business lunch on a Thursday with one other person in the whole place?). Dining partners got hamburger (pre-made patty) and fries (frozen, nothing special and other got steak and cheese (overloaded with mayo, as was burger). I got the chicken empanadas after reading these posts. They were ok. Between the slow service, food drenched in mayo and average food, it is definitely not worth a trip back, even though it is only a short drive from the office.

I concur that the empanadas were the height of the meal. I also enjoyed the grilled meats. My office is not too far from there and I have had the roasted chicken at lunch and it was better than the chicken we had at dinner. I think that they may roast the chicken for lunch and keep it for dinner. Or it could have been an off night.

Went with the kids the other night. The empanadas are really good, and the chicken was tasty as well. The kids went for the American food on the menu (Buffalo wings and an Itallian sub) which were OK, but nothing special.
That makes two good places for empanadas close to Columbia. This place and the coffee shop near CheeburgerCheeburger.

re: ko1
I have to agree. The empanadas are fantastic, but unless you really want them, or pretty good and reasonably priced grilled meats, including blood sausage, not much point in driving to Jessup.
Mr Baltoellen works not far from there, and also loves the pizza and sandwiches, but not sure they are worth the drive given closer options.
And, yes, Whitemarsh, the people who work there are terrifically nice, and the little store stocks alfajores, the terrific sandwich cookie with the dulce de leche filling.

Agree with Ellen and KO - the empanadas were really very very good and worth a trip. The rest was was good and a value for the price and therefore worth a trip if you live/work in the vacinity. I think that it was worth a chowhound outing if only for the empanadas (and yes the cookies :) Oh, and Mr. Sistereurope actually enjoyed his take out leftovers...
