Lakeport....again

Dear Fellow Hounds:
It's time again for the annual trek to Lakeport to meet up with DH's cousins and extended family for a week.

A quick search brought up my post from last year:

Does anyone have anything new to talk about foodwise in the Lakeport vicinity? Stan, are you still out there? Anything new to tell me about?

I'm still trying to get the various family members to try something different - this has been going on for about 40 years or so...

DH and I are adventuresome eaters (think offal, any kind of seafood, etc.) Rest of family thinks I'm weird (by comparison, I am!)

Am I doomed to another year of Round Table Pizza, TNT Mexican, and casseroles with cream of mushroom soup?

  1. I always say when in doubt, never knock an IHOP - my favorite Chowish Chain.

    1. From twenty years ago when we made a biannual trip with young boys for fishing found Lakeport wanting. Since there were a four families the adults would go to Kanotai (sp) Inn for a nice dinner. Not sure if the Inn is still there. But maybe a local Indian gambling site may be close.

Lake county is not somewhere for great food.

I do remember carrying food from the Bay Area and cooking (we had cabins with kitchens)

Yes, this area has never been known for it's gastronomy... Hope springs eternal. The dinners we prepare ourselves are probably the best we can expect. We are additionally hampered by those members of the group who don't want to go anywhere that they can't walk to. Actually got them to try a new place tonight. I'll post something later...

      2. So I managed to drag DH to the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake - what a delightful place! It is so totally different from most of the places in the Clearlake area.

We went for lunch: A burger with sweet potato fries for DH and Baja Fish Tacos for me - with a switch at the half-way point so we each got to enjoy both dishes. The burger was quite subsantial - DH enjoyed it very much - I thought it was a bit dry but tasty. Love sweet potato fries and order them whenever I see them on a menu!

Fish tacos were yummy, if greasy (as they say, "in a good way"). They were accompanied by a small dish of coleslaw; I felt this was redundant as the tacos were garnished with shredded cabbage (as they should be). I think that a better side would be a corn/black bean/tomato/red pepper/onion salad. But I'm not complaining! The tacos were tasty.

Service was pleasant but laid back (i.e., slow) but we didn't care much as it was so nice sitting there... We look forward to visiting there again - maybe we can even entice the rest of the gang!
