I've only lived in the NY area for a couple months. I have a few favorite street vendors and I was wondering what percentage of vendors go away when the weather gets cold? I'd hate to be deprived of some of this food during the winter.

What percent are seasonal? Does it depend on the type of food or whether it's a cart or truck?

What months do they normally leave and come back?

Thanks so much.

What areas? Jackson Heights' street food scene is pretty much year round, but it gets halved (at least) during the winter.

In my experience, the fruit vendors disappear when it gets cold (they'd be selling frozen fruit) but most of the cooked food vendors are out year-round.

JFores, mostly Jackson Heights and Astoria area...anyone know if Sammy's Halal is open year round?

LloydG, do you mean the ones standing on the street or the ones in trucks/large food stands?

Sammy's has been there year-round in the past. But a lot of the Jackson Heights & Woodside carts either go away entirely for the winter, or skip the really cold days. The enclosed carts like Sammy's and the taco trucks tend to tough it out though.

Slightly OT, but any further on the rumor that Sammy of Sammy's Halal was opening a sit-downer in Astoria? That might have a bearing on whether his JH cart is there year-round (or at all).

"What months do they normally leave and come back?" They are not college students, if you see them wearing a vendor ID they work the trade all year selling one thing or another.
