Cilantro Mexican Grill, Geary Street, SF
The old El Yucateco space on Geary has turned into "Cilantro Mexican Grill"
The menu features omelettes and egg dishes, quesadillas, burritos, tacos, soups (pozole every day!) and entrees. I've attached photos of the menu below.
I had the pollo a la oaxaqueno which was boneless chicken (probably thighs) covered in a dark ancho chile sauce. The sauce was good -- not tons of heat, but good. I would have liked a little more depth instead of flavoring through salt, but it was enjoyable. The dish came with two little mounds of rice and corn tortillas.
My friend had the mar y tierra taco, which funnily enough reminded me of the tacos that my grandfather made in the restaurant he owned in LA called Bill's Taco House (http://www.chowhound.com/topics/392833). I think it was mostly because the beef was in the shape of a (large, thin) hamburger patty.
I didn't taste the taco, but it was huge -- almost like a dosa with three corn tortillas under it. It seemed to have a "wrapper" of cheese (or it could have been thin egg - it was hard-ish), then the beef patty, then sauteed shrimp. I didn't taste it. My friend declared it a "10 out of 10" thought I'll have to taste it to believe that. ;)
At any rate, I'll return. The food seems honest, though not knock-you-down awesome, and they are working hard at providing good food. Service is a tad clueless. The restaurant was bustling at lunch today.
Looking at the menu, I can't figure out what their emphasis is. I told the manager-type guy that I thought they were going to have Yucatecan food (the salsas are very Yucatecan) and he said that they would be adding cochinita pibil.

Gosh, that is a tough location ... good luck to them ... and open till 2am on the weekend ... will try to stop by. I'm kind of waiting for Nopalitos (from the Nopa folks) up near Falleti's to open ...supposedly August. Maybe I'll do a twofer, breakfast at Cilantro and later Nopalitos.

Any updates? Would love to hear about the cochinita pibil . . . if it's been added to the menu.
