If you are at Grotto Bay, try Rustico in Flatts for dinner. Has a nice atmosphere, pleasant staff and garen dining as well. It's Italian and really quite good and reasonable on island standards. Bermuda isnt a culinary wonderland so keep that in mind. Another spot I like, not so much for food but setting is Micky's at the Elbow Beach Hotel. It's right on the beach and if you have a good moon night you can watch it rise with your feet in the sand. Reservations a MUST. I havent been but have lots of friends who like Blu at TheBelmont. Open for lunch and dinner with views of Great Sound. Someone mentioned the Swizzle Inn here. Very much a Bermuda institution. Be careful of those swizzles though! They serve them by the pitcher in martini glasses and they will sneak up on you! Enjoy Bermuda. So, so beautiful!

re: MellieMac
As I've mentioned previously, I would recommend Beau Rivage at Newstead over Blu at Belmont. I think the view is nicer, great sunset over the harbour and I found the food was better. Reservations are a must. (441) 232-8686
Mickey's is great at sunset for just having dinner beachside. Or if you'd like, you can sit up top above Mickey's and have drinks at the Seabreeze Terrace and order some nibblies while you watch the surf at sunset.
Hidden gem is Waterloo House in town. Lunch is wonderful there, an oasis in the midst of the bustle of business. Sadly they're tearing down the hotel soon but if you can, give them a call to see if they're still open for lunch.

For dinner, I wouldn't miss Blackbeard's Hideaway in St. George's, near Fort St. Catherine. Go in time for the sunset. WHY? Because it has the most beautiful views of the ocean and the fort. And because this may be the best place on the island to watch the sunset. And because you won't have a big 'ole honking cruise ship spoiling the view. And because they make an awesome Dark 'n Stormy (local favorite drink). And because the service is friendly, but professional. And because most of the tourists can't find the place. And because the food is GREAT! Start with their Bermuda fish chowder (don't forget to add the sherry pepper sauce and Black Seal rum that will be brought to your table with the soup). Then order whatever seafood is the night's special. It will be fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented.
They are also open for lunch, and the food is equally good then (order the salad with grilled Wahoo). Why go there for lunch? Because it's just up the steps from some great snorkeling, they have facilities for you to change in, and there's NEVER a bad time to have a Dark 'n Stormy!
Another lunchtime favorite of ours is at the opposite end of the island (take the ferry). Freeport in the Dockyard (not in the mall where all the tourists go---it's near the gates).
WHY? Because you'll find more locals than tourists there. And because the fishcake sandwich is DELICIOUS! They also make a good (but different) Bermuda fish chowder (but you'll still be offered the sherry pepper sauce & rum---be sure to add some). If you're more adventurous, order the curried mussels. If one is available, sit at a table outside.›11 Replies-

re: goody1720
First, let me make a correction---it's Blackbeard's HIDEOUT (not Hideaway as I posted above). The only "address" I could find was this: Achilles Beach, Fort St. Catherine Road
You can get the shuttle (I think it's about $3 per person each way) up to there from the square in St. George's. Or, you can walk (uphill, but a pleasant walk). Once you get to St. Catherine's Beach, the road splits. Head to the LEFT (the right will take you up to the fort), and Blackbeard's is at the top of the hill. It is directly above Achilles Bay (a TINY beach, but GREAT snorkeling). Here's a link to some info about the place, as well as a link to their menu:

re: Anne
Hi Anne - It appears the unfortunately my hotel is on the opposite end of the Islad (I'm staying at The Grotto). How long of a trip is it over to Achille's Beach and can you make a day of it over there, i.e. go snorkling and then head to blackbeards for suinset and maybe catch a cab back to the hotel after that?

re: goody1720
Isn't The Grotto in Bailey's Bay, on the other side ofthe causeway from st George's? Or is there a new Grotto in the west end?
I love the Swizzle Inn and disregard any talk of it being too touristy. Excellent fish and chips, Bermuda fish chowder, Dark and Stormys and of course, the rum swizzles.
Right across from Swizzle Inn is an excellent icecream shop. Both are just up the road from the Grotto (the one in Bailey's Bay).

This is the only one I know of, Blue Hole Hill, Bailey's Bay.

Maybe there is another one in Southampton.

re: KOK
Jason, the Grotto Bay Hotel is spitting distance from the airport which is located on the St. George's side of the island. Blackbeard's will be very convenient for you to get to. The one in Southampton you're thinking of is The Reefs perhaps?
Scooper, check out the thread previously for "simple food in July". That covers quite a few recommendations for the island.
Is there any particular food you like/dislike? Are you amenable to hole in the walls or only sit down places?

re: Anne
Anne,
Just returned from my 22nd visit to the St. George's Club, and must say that after reading your review you brought so many good memories from our visit last week.
You are so spot on on when you say-
"For dinner, I wouldn't miss Blackbeard's Hideaway in St. George's, near Fort St. Catherine. Go in time for the sunset. WHY? Because it has the most beautiful views of the ocean and the fort. Had lunch there twice last week, always a great time, and and you are right... you can't beat the snorkeling and the sunset.Cheers...
