Sweet spots in San Diego

On my last visit home to San Diego I went to Elizabethan Desserts and love, love, loved it!! I'm curious to find out if there has been a new bakery/pastry shop that has opened within the last year with just as much character and delicious pastries.

Beard Papa's, a chain up in LA, is opening their first store in the area in National City (3030 Plaza Bonita Rd) on Aug 2. From what I hear, their cream puffs are their specialty.

It's been a while since I've been to Extraordinary Desserts. I stopped going because I found their desserts too sweet. I've also been to Beard Papa many times. If I plan correctly I think I can hit the other places.

I have to second Extraordinary Desserts being too sweet. Other than that they're good, but if I order I'll split it 2 or 3 way.

Cream Puffs is all Beard Papa's has. It is a chain from Japan. I have had their cream puffs from their stores in Los Angeles and Shanghai, and they are very good.

Just drove by a spot under construction at University and 5th Ave in Hillcrest - Mille Feuilles, chocolates and pasteries I think the sign says, coming in August. Anyone know anything about it?

Those Green Tea puffs are to die for, and with my lack of willpower, they'll probably be the death of me.

There is a new little place in Ocean Beach called Azucar - a cuban patisserie. They sell scones, cake, cupcakes, cookies and macaroons in addition to savory cuban breakfast/lunch items.

The Elegant Truffle is new in Point Loma and in addition to wonderful truffles, has lots of supplemental goodies including cheesecake, angel food cake, caramels, cookies, dipped fruits and berries, etc. The selection changes. All offerings are excellent

Eclipse Chocolat has some yummy cupcakes and truffles. The menu isn't quite as diverse as Elizabethan though. Extraordinary Desserts (in Little Italy or Banker's Hill) has fabulous desserts. They are beautiful and tasty but extremely rich and sweet so watch out.
