Vancouver: need recommendations for either Italian or Greek, W Broadway or Kitsalano

NWPeter Jul 16, 2008 02:21 PM

We would appreciate recommendations for a very good, reasonably priced Greek or Italian restaurant in the West Broadway or Kitsalano areas. For this Saturday night around 8:30. Other cuisines considered, but no Asian for this Saturday. Thanks in advance!

We always enjoy Ouzeri for Greek and La Buca for Italian (the later is far more upscale and "fine dining" than the former which is a comfy neighbourhood hang-out).

Sadly the Ouzeri is no more -- it has been replaced by something called The Shack, which was very busy this evening when we passed by. The menu is not to my taste and is certainly not Greek.

Totally agree with the La Buca rec if you can get a reso there (call now!). Never sure what "reasonably priced" means but you will have a great meal and you won't drop a bundle. Look hard at the daily specials if you go -- they are always outstanding, as are the pastas. Oh and of course the short rib... and don't forget the panna cotta for dessert. The only thing we've had that we didn't love was the chicken liver app -- a bit too well done both times. BTW you can come as you are or get spiffed up if you like -- although the room is gracious and the service white linenish, I've seen people there in shorts and jeans.

I've heard the new Italian Kitchen tratt on 4th is pretty good but haven't had a chance to try it since it opened a couple weeks ago.

If you can make it a bit further east (still on Broadway) you might enjoy Kalamata. It's been consistently good for us over the years.

I third La Buca. Reservations are a must on Saturday night. I would choose La Buca over Italian Kitchen any night. Maybe check out Apollonia for Greek. It's closer to Granville Island than Kits.

Forgot to mention other cuisines. If you like French, check out Bistrot Bistro.

La Quercia on 4th and Alma has just recently opened and from all account sounds very good. Owners are ex-La Buca.

Has anyone checked out La Quercia yet? I'm hoping to go in the next week or so.

What with shoulder injuries and all I haven't been dining out so would love to live vicariously through you, i_h! Can't wait to hear what you think of La Quercia.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We ended up at Bistrot Bistro, and all four of us enjoyed it. Everyone ordered something different and there were no disappointments with any of the food, or the service.

Our first dinner at la Buca (italian) last week made it one of the restaurants to go back to when we come back to Vancouver. Two appetizers and two main courses added up to about $75 before wine, taxes, and tip. The Blue Water Cafe (seafood) made it too ( it is in a different price range , however. Located in Yaletown)
