CambridgeFoodie Jul 16, 2008 09:32 AM

Apologies for the mundane request. Can any of you offer a recommendation on where I should pick up potato salad for a picnic in the cambridge, watertown, boston area.

Thank you in advance.

My favorite potato salad in the Boston area is from Barry's Village Deli in the Waban section of Newton right off of Beacon Street.

"Wellesly" Farms as opposed to "Wellesley" (no last E) is actually BJ's house brand of foods, not related to any real or imagined farm in Wellesley, MA....Just an FYI...;)

        Russo's in Watertown!

Cambridge to Watertown via Huron/16 you could try Formaggio, Huron Market (think they have pre-weighed containers?), and Russo's if you don't get it at the others.

For something slightly different, try Brazilian maionese which is pretty similar to a standard mayo based potato salad with a few more ingredients (unfortunately usually frozen veggies at most outlets, but they also serve a _lot_ so its usually fresh). In Somerville: Churrasco Grill or Oasis in Medford (both by lb off buffet). Cafe Brazil in Allston a la carte or Cafe Belo per-lb. Muqueca offered it on their buffet, but for some reason I don't think its on the menu. Rio in Arlington Ctr might be closer, but they had some odd things on the buffet for salad and can't predict if they will have it.

Dave's Fresh Pasta and Blue Ribbon also come to mind (the latter may not have it all the time) as other nice versions. For something inexpensive and basic, there is McKinnon's.

Bob's in Medford has great chicken salad and tuna salad so I would recommend to try the potato salad (though I haven't tried it). If you don't get a chance to before the picnic, I would definitely recommend visiting Bob's another time for a sub, sandwich or almost anything else they have!

Too bad Parish Cafe doesn't sell theirs by the pound. It is soooo good. Not heavily mayo-ey. Besides my mom's, Parish's is the only potato salad I'll eat.

Call me crazy but I actually like Shaw's/Star Market's version.

Roche Bros sells a pretty good onion potato salad.

I haven't tried it, but friends of mine like Costco's potato salad.
