Driving from Denver to Cardondale

My family and friends are driving from Denver to Carbondale tonight. We want some place good to eat, preferably closer to Denver since we arrive a bit after dinner time. We have a long drive so we don't want to backtrack toward Denver. Any ideas? We are traveling with kids, but they are very restaurant savvy. Should be just eat in the airport? Thanks.

  1. Nonono, don't eat at the airport! I'd say your best bet is to stop in Idaho Springs, which is about a half-hour west of Denver off I-70. Very easy off and back onto the highway. The most obvious choice would be Beau Jo's pizza, but there are other places in the same stretch. Get off at the second Idaho Springs exit (exit 240 for CO-103/Mt Evans), turn right at the bottom of the ramp on 13th Street, then right again on Miner Street, which is lined with restaurants and shops. Beau Jo's is two blocks down on the right.

Other Chowhounds will surely have recs, too.

Kitt, thanks for the tip on Idaho Springs. Will look for other specific recs in town from others...

I also realize now, not being familiar with the area, that there seem to be towns from the airport toward the west along I-70, even closer to the airport that we could stop in. Any suggestions not far off I-70 in Lakeside, Mountain View, Applewood, or Genesee Park?

It is going to be hot in the Denver area today, if they can handle driving 1.5 hours from the airport, I'd suggest Food Hedz ( in Frisco. Its the first Frisco exit off I70 and in the Walmart strip mall. Carbondale will be a little less than 2 more hours.

      2. IF you can make it to Edwards, about 2 hours from DIA, then you can stop at Larkburger, which is excellent. I always stop there on my drives from Denver to Aspen

With kids in the car and arrival after dinner I'm guessing 1.5 to 2 hours is going to be a stretch but agree that Larkburger is awesome. But, it did remind me that there is a Smashburger off I-70 in Wheatridge at 3356 Youngfield St
Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 which offers great burgers and veggie frites.

Also in Edwards Eat Drink/Dish is fantastic... very fresh, introcit cuisine.

          2. A Colorado institution is El Rancho at the Evergreen exit off I-70. Their website is
