I've been wondering about it too - the name sounds Japanese to me, which seems incongruous with the mozzarella part.

Yes, exactly! That's threw me for a loop as well, but this is what I read...
Obikà (pronounced Oh-bee-KA) comes from obiccà, the word in the Neapolitan dialect meaning, "Here it is."
Check out this menu...very simple...very cheesy! :)

It's a small chain that started in Rome, specializing in mozzarella. Very curious to see how good it is as I've found it nearly impossible to find a mozzarella in NYC that is in any way comparable to what I get in Rome, not to mention points south to Naples where they actually make it. It just doesn't travel very well.

I was impressed with the mozz at Bond 45

I actually went to Obika in Milan in Jan 2008 and our waiter told us that they are opening one in NYC. It's actually great for mozzarella - they have more types than I thought existed and if the front of the house is as schooled as they are in Milan, then they can tell you the differences b/w each type as well (i.e region of Italy its from, how its made), etc. Enjoy!

I work in the building....the box around that place has been there forever and nobody is ever working on it there....when I asked the guards what the deal is they just shrugged their shoulders....

i was working this saturday at 590 madison. There where loads of boxes in the atrium with workers all over the place working at Obika. The security guard said it should be open within a week...i'd take that with a grain of salt but I saw the boxes and workers hammering away...

Obikà will open on Sept. 22 in the sculpture garden of 590 Madison Avenue, the former I.B.M. building.

I've been to the one in Rome, which is really nice and the one in Milan which is an odd location in the Galeria (shopping mall).
Wait until you find out what mozzarella is *supposed* to taste like!
