Best high-end Mexican?

Is Rosa Mexicano as good as I've heard? Better than Dos Caminos? Am I missing another great one?

  1. I've not been to Dos Caminos, but I think that Pampano is better than Rosa Mexicano - with an emphasis on sea food. If you go, be sure to try the lobster tacos. They also have a good prix fixe lunch, and a pretty terrace upstairs.

I agree, Pampalona is the best high end mexican in the city. It's much better than Rosa Mexicano (which has seemed to deteriorate over the past few years), Zarela, and Dos Caminos, and is slightly better than Caliente Cab Co. (I kid, I kid).

I recommend ordering and sharing as many appetizers as you can eat. They are all out of this world.

    2. I've never been to Rosa, but Dos Caminos is nothing great. You should try Zarela's. It's on the UES/Midtown East and it's really fantastic food - great quality and flavor. Try the spicy lamb or pork dishes and definitely a margarita!

I like the drinks and the appetizers at Rosa better than the main courses. But, it's pretty reliable, and is a favorite of ours whenever friends from London are visiting with their children.

      2. Although Zarela is good, it doesn't feel upscale to me, more like your typical Mexican place.

A step above that, there is Vamos on 20th and 1st.

Rosa's has much more of a high end, special night out feel to it. Beware though that if you are going for decor/scene, you must go to the one near Union Square. The one on the UES is much older and I was dissapointed compared to the feeling of the Union Square location. You might have to wait at the bar for awhile if you dont have a reservation.

Dos Caminos is always a solid choice, any of the locations have tasty food and a lively atmosphere. I recommend the different steak, chicken, and taco dishes to share if you are with a group of friends.

Another solid choice is Agave in the West Village.

        1. I think Dos Caminos is a good option too. They have a few locations in the city and some of them have outdoor seating, which is a fun option with the nice weather. They have really good tacos and especially good cocktails. They do tableside guac, which I don't know is that unique anymore. Definitely better than Rosa Mexicano. Zarela is good too.

          1. Pompano and Maya.
The former for seafood, the latter for a larger variety of dishes.
