Calgary: Iberico Ham

RodVito Jul 15, 2008 10:06 AM

We were lucky enough to find ourselves eating dinner in Ad Hoc in Yountville, CA over the weekend, and had an amazing experience. My advice....if you get the opportunity to go to Napa Valley, this is a MUST. At $50 per head for a 4 course meal, you cant go wrong. Expect amazing food, atmosphere, and the typical Keller standard for service, which is unreal.

We had a green bean salad with Iberico Ham from Spain, which was unreal. I want to know if there is anywhere in Calgary you can get this type of ham. Google is coming up empty....

Contact Worldwide Specialty Foods in Calgary. They are a Calgary distributor of Jamon Iberico. They should be eager to tell you who their customers ( retailers, restaurants, etc.) are.

There are several grades of Jamon Iberico, with the cheapest starting at about $200 per kilo at a deli, more if at a restaurant or a snooty deli. Belotta will be over $300 in Calgary, if available.

You could try Lina's on Centre St N. I know she has serrano and can't remember if I saw Iberico.

A 6Kg leg will cost you about $400 in the UK - working out at $6 for 100g. That's a serious mark up on the Calgary product!!

The last time I bought Iberico ham was in London's Burough Market and the price was 125GBP per kilo. About $30 per 100g. I don't think it was good value, but I did pick some up 2-3 times a month. Gotta love the pig.

Try it. Then you'll know why Im willing to pay that much for it.

I saw similar prices in Vancouver...$34.99/100 g.....what a rip off! In Spain I had various hams that costs between 30 and 50 euro per kilo and they are awsome. There are hams in Spain that cost much more but unless you have been eating Pata Negra 5J all your life you will not tell the difference. By the way, I have been to Ad Hoc and it's not worth $50 per person and they are not eager to give seconds unless you spend some serious $ on wine.

They had Iberian ham at Janice Beaton a couple of years ago. I haven't been in for a bit so I'm not sure if they're still carrying it.

Rod, you forgot to mention the best part about AdHoc - free refills! All you can eat on any of the dishes.

Anyway, I've never seen Iberico ham anywhere in Alberta, but it hasnt been available all that long. Globe and Mail had a good article about this earlier this year.

While it'd be great to be able to eat IJ here, im afraid if Calgary did import it, it'd be another one item in a long list of things i couldn't afford.

The free refills was something that was offered....but we couldnt take them up on it!!! There were four of us eating, and the portion was very generous. We left desert half uneaten!!!

We had a beef rib eye for the main course, which was the most amazing beef I have ever put in my mouth.....almost lamb like in its consistency and flavour. The things that they do with Sous Vide are magic. I want one.

Thanks for the article.....great info on what exactly it is, and why I shouldnt hold my breath to get it here....
