In Search Of...Open Face Beef Sandwich w/ Gravy.

Fryboy Jul 15, 2008 12:16 AM

Watching tonight's "Diners, Drive Ins & Dives" on Food Network got me jonesin' for a good beef sandwich with gravy. The kind you eat with a knife & fork. Any suggestions?

It may not be the best, and I'm sure I'll be shouted down, but if I were looking for that, I'd go to Canter's.

      I know Mel's Drive-In has one.

Junior's has an open faced brisket sandwich, as well as a meatloaf sandwich.

Square One has an open-faced skirt steak sandwich.

Jerry's Deli also does one, but their mashed potatoes are not as fresh; at least on the turkey open faced sammie, they're a bit gummier (this doesn't bother me, but it might other hounds).

The Jolly Jug in El Monte. The beefiest.

I drive by that restaurant each workday. My rideshare partner & I have wondered what the food was like since there's a sign that says "The Most Honored Sandwiches in .. (can't remember)". Are their sandwichws that remarkable? It might be worth a stop by for a to go dinner.

Good joint, good sandwiches. We have made two or three trips there, not necessarily just for that but Hey, as long as we're in the vicinity... Patty melt's good, all the sides we've had are good. Changed hands a couple of years back, now owned by an Asian family that seems to know what they're doing. They've scraped the layers of old cigarette smoke off the walls, too.

One of my all-time favorite meals! I get it at Rae's on Pico in Santa Monica. They will give you all the gravy you want and the mashed potatoes are real. Coles slaw included. About $5.50 or $6.50, I think.

if price is no matter, then musso's will fit the bill.

Musso's hot beef sandwich is terrific and not very expensive.

Nichols Restaurant (Marina Del Rey) - I think they have 4 or 5 various open-faced sandwiches with gravy. Never personally ordered, but co-workers loved it.

i think downtown nick's coffee shop on spring whre it curves after passing by alameda. makes a hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gray.

but the one i'm craving right now is the one from Musso, along with a Gibson or Martini.
