Udon Noodles/Tempura in DC and NoVa

Watching a rerun of the Japanese Iron Chef on Fine Living. The theme ingredient is udon noodles, which takes me back to my time in Tokyo. My wife and I would regular eat at little hole-in-the-wall noodle shops that served excellent udon noodle soups with excellent shrimp and vegetable tempura placed on top.

Anyone got suggestions for where I can find steaming bowls of udon broth in the area?

  1. Teaism has a decent bowl of udon noodle soup. I prefer the shrimp udon noodle. There is one at 8th & D, NW and another at R & Conn. Ave., NW.

    1. Tachibana in McLean has udon.

Not DC/NoVa was the tiny Moby Dick's in Wheaton, MD, does just about everything well, although it's hard to go for the udon with so much fresh fish in the rolls. The crispy spicy tuna roll seems to be something I have to order every time.

Excellent. We live just down the road from Tachibana so will try it this weekend and report back.

Any places in downtown DC come to mind also?

Sakana on P Street (between 20th and 21st) is great. Good sushi, good prices, fast service. I am pretty sure they serve udon.

                They def. serve tempura.

Went to Tachibana today and thought the udon was excellent (the sushi looked fantastic also, but didnt have room for that). It came with 5 large pieces of tempura and was filling enough for a main course.

The atmosphere was way nicer than the strip mall suggested and the restaurant was full for lunch. We'll certainly go back.

              1. I had some very flavorful udon at Murasaki - the dashi broth was light and tasty and the noodles were springy and very fresh.
