Buttercake? Suzi Cakes? Help!! I am looking for an incredible layered coconut cake, preferably with a coconut custardy filling or a delicious coconut cream cheese frosting. Any ideas?

in century city clemintine makes a wonderful cake:

    Coconut Snowflake Layer Cake-
moist coconut cake layered with cream cheese frosting and showered with coconut.
large cake (serves 25-30), medium cake (serves 12-16), small cake (serves 6-8)

Buttercake Bakery makes a wonderful coconut layer cake, as well as cupcakes.

Babalu in Santa Monica makes an Italian wedding cake with coconut and nuts that's pretty special.

If weho is okay, Asia de Cuba makes a lovely coconut cake - you might ask if you can buy a whole one.

Also farther east, Sweet Lady Jane is often recommended.

The coconut cake at Buttercake has frosting between the layers, not cream or custard.

If forced to pick between the two, I'd give the coconut kahlua cake the edge.
