Fuzion on Church Street for Summerlicious: Impressive
I had never actually considered dining anywhere on Church Street from past experience, but a friend wanted to go to Fuzion and assured me that I'd enjoyed it so I went.
It was quite impressive actually. A little too fancy for my liking, and I felt under-dressed. It's Church Street, I didn't think to dress up. That's ok though, I got over that. It's a nice restaurant.
The service was friendly. They kind of staggered in between courses and the bill—quite a lot since they seemed to be over-staffed for the amount of people dining—but good things are worth waiting for, I suppose!
I ordered the watermelon and tomato salad. It came with a goat cheese on it which was kind of mediocre. I honestly didn't enjoy the the salad. It was good for what it was, but I would've preferred if there were an actual salad on the menu. Call me old school, but I just like greens in my salad. Came with a chipotle mayo dab on it. Interesting. It was good for what it was though, very fresh and summery, appropriate for Summerlicious. My friend got the calamari, which was Greek style. The croutons were pretty impressive. They were some sort of stale bread that had been fried and/or soaking in the Greek-style lemon-olive oil-oregano marinade. It was definitely pretty flavourful. I wouldn't call it superb but it was enjoyable.
For entrées we both got the bison bavette. It was awesome. I often buy bison and try to prepare it at home but I'm no professional at it for sure and it always tastes a bit gamey. At Fuzion it didn't taste gamey at all, and it impressed me very much. Though I ordered medium rare it was a tad overdone, but my friend's was perfect. It was great though still, quite good. It wasn't marinated surprisingly. It was so moist and tender I thought it had been marinated, but apparently not, just drizzled with a jus of soy sauce and something else, maybe truffle, it was really good. I'm no professional but I thought it was cooked great. I really enjoyed it. Some gratinéed chips came, with some white stuff... cheese of some sort? Tip: let the chips sit in that a bit, they're really good with that. The white stuff worked on the bison too, quite well. The entrée was perfect; not too heavy, not too light. Very satisfying and flavourful. Excellent.
The dessert was quite impressive. We both got the polenta cake with stone fruit (peaches and nectarines maybe). It was really good. I was pretty impressed! Dessert usually leaves something to desire but it was quite good!!
$35. Good value. Not great value, but good. The salad made me feel a little ripped off, but the bison and dessert made up for it for sure. The bison was amazing! If you go, get the bison. It was really good, the best I've tried for bison, and it wasn't gamey at all. The dessert was fabulous too. It was quite satisfying and I would go again. I'd recommend it for sure!!!
