Le Creuset Discoloration

I accidently turned on the wrong burner this week and my 1-month old Le Creuset casserole was the victim of high heat for about 15 minutes. There was nothing in the pot & now there is a medium gray discoloration on the bottom of the pot the size of the small buner (about 5 inches). I wiped it with a rag & a very thin brownish residue came up, but the discoloration appears to now be baked in.

Does anyone know if this discoloration will affect the cooking qualities or the enamel? Can this be cleaned in any way? Will Le Creuset cover this under their warranty? Thanks in advance for any guidance

    Aside from the discoloration (which is in my opinion is completely harmless and should be left alone) what you really need to worry about is has this damaged the pan. The enamel might have been damaged. I would follow the advice of CindyJ before I start trying to clean a cosmetic mark. I always compare cleaning the inside of a LC to cleaning the bottom of my shoes. Sure, you can do it, and it'll be shiny, but it's just going to get dirty the very next time you use it.

      Yep. Cook yourself up a nice beefy onion soup or some oxtails or braise a few lamb shanks in a nice tomato-y wine-y sauce and then see how your pan is looking.

      Every couple of years I toss some bleach in one of mine and it perks back up, but I like to think of all the discolorations as a mark of honor.

      Try Bartender's Companion. I have just re-done the tile in a bathroom, and I was at a loss for how to remove the stains in my 1927 porcelain bathtub, which was horribly discolored. Truly, Bartender's Companion worked like magic. It looks like a new tub, it's that free of stains. The various internet sites I consulted on this said to NEVER use chlorine bleach on any porcelain, and I think that would mean the Le Creuset pans as well. I also noticed that a web site that sells All Clad sells BC along side, and I have since used it for cleaning my All-Clad and my copper. Works like a charm every time. BC is about 80 years old, and comes in a shaker can like Ajax, and costs about $2.00 per can. I get it at the hardware store.

        Do you mean Barkeepers Friend? Yes, that works but it can be abrasive. Best to make it into a paste first and use gently, or buy the liquid form of it. I would try the Le Creuset cleaner first though.

          I use it with water, so it's not really that abrasive & I haven't had any issues with it. what's in the Le Creuset cleaner? I've never seen it...

        First, Le Creuset does sell a special cleaner for their pots. You could try that. I have cleaned mine by letting it sit with a mild bleach solution inside it overnight (like 3 parts water to 1 part bleach). I did this on the rec of Cook's Illustrated. It does work, but I am not sure if it doesn't start a pattern of needing to clean the cookware more often. I wouldn't use an abrasive.

          Le Creuset recommends boiling a mixture of Tide with enzymes and water. I think it was one to four. They say to wipe it with white vinegar to make it shiny again after. You might Google that as I had posted their recipe on the net in several places. Also cream of tartar, and baking soda might work. Don't scrub too hard. Some have used denture tablets, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and they say those take off all stains. Please post if anything does take it off. I'm curious too.

          Use bleach as a last resort as it might etch the surface and it definitely does it you use it too often. Sometimes the discoloration goes away by itself with use.

          If possible, take a photo of the discoloration, email it to customer service at LC, and ask them if it's covered by warranty. They recently sent me a brand new replacement for a 35-year old French oven that was discolored on the inside.

            Try Soft Scrub...SS really cleaned up a 20+ years old white LC gratin for me. I was amazed by the difference.
