Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Bar Blanc

A friend took me to Bar Blanc for the final meal in a weeklong celebration of my birthday. We ordered the 5-course tasting menu, which was composed of smaller portions of dishes off of the regular menu. I tend to prefer something a little more imaginative for a tasting menu, but most of the dishes we had were very good. We started w/the kampachi sashimi, which was very good. The jumbo scallop (HUGE) in a leek foam (I know, I know, but it was good) was an excellent flavor combination. The halibut w/corn was also very good. The only poor dish in the bunch was the duck breast main. The duck was cooked very rare, which I don't mind, but it should have been more seared on the outside to render some of the fat. As it was, the dish was sort of stringy/chewy and unappealing. This was the only dish the 2 of us didn't finish. Dessert is not on the online menu and I'd had a few drinks by that point, so I don't remember details. It was a parfait style mix of meringue, cream, and sorbet that ended up being a refreshing way to finish a filling meal. I'd definitely go back as many of the dishes on the menu sounded appealing.

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed it. We had yet another excellent dinner there the other day. I had the scallops (3 of them) and even though I am not a big fan of scallops, I loved them. The roasted veal breast was also great.

I am a big fan of scallops and tend to order them whenever they're on the menu. I'm often sorely disappointed, but the ones at BB were perfectly cooked, and, as I wrote, HUGE (almost 2 in. in diameter).

i keep meaning to try bar blanc again. first time was enjoyable and months later, i feel like its one of the finest restaurants to have opened this past year.

Yes, the pastas are great. Unfortunately, they do not currently serve the lamb shoulder lasagna, but my partner keeps on getting the fettucine with rabbit.
