Former restaurant in the North End...what was it called?

Every time I walk down Hanover Street I recall a Sicilian-themed restaurant's neon sign (gone for at least 10 years) which had a map of Italy and the Island of Sicily was about 20x larger in proportion than it should have been. It made me laugh every time I walked by. Picture the "boot" of Italy kicking the "rock" of Sicily, only the rock is bigger than the boot!

I think I ate their once or twice and it was casual, nothing fancy, but good. I believe it was one or two doors down from Cantina Italiana. Does anybody remember the name of this place?

  1. I think it had the name "Cantina" in it also....something like "La Cantina Siciliana" maybe???
One time I was meeting some people at Cantina Italiana and some folks ended up at the place you are mentioning by mistake, I believe due to the name similarity.

Hey that sounds familiar...I think that was it. Thanks.

I cannot for the life of me think of what's in its place right now..another restaurant?
I wonder if anyone kept the neon sign...that was classic :-).

that's another part of my problem remembering...I can't remember exactly what is there now..only the block that it's on...maybe it's Cibo's space, that place isn't *too* old..I don't know for sure.

As for the sign, yeah I hope so too. I feel like a part of me dies whenever I see a neon sign disappear, I love those things.

    2. could it have been the European?

        1. I was going to say The European too but wasn't that up the street from the Cantina?
Walking down from Haymarket, that is.

It was definitely not the European--it was in the other direction a couple of blocks.

Almost all the way to the 7/11 on that same side of the street?

not quite that far, only a couple of doors down (probably in that direction), from Cantina Italiana

                    Ralphie...is it/was it:

                    Emedio's (CLOSED) ($$)
                    Italian, Pizza
                    417 Hanover St, Boston 02113
Btwn Hanover Ave & Harris St ...???

                    I got this at Menupages.com

                    1. re: Gio

I don't think so....that name doesn't ring a bell, plus I'm fairly certain it closed years before Menupages even started up.

So far I think poptart's response above takes the lead.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions though (and keep 'em coming!)

I'll have to ask my brother if he remembers the name, he has one hell of a memory!

Wasn't that accordion/music shop nearby? Now I can't remember the name of that place either...
Also, 15+ years ago there was a great cooking/kitchen supply shop on Hanover as well. Man, has the North End changed!

                        1. re: poptart

The name of the Accordion / music shop was Tosi's and yes it was on that same street about a block away. One of the newer restaurants is in that spot now.

I actually walked down Hanover the other day and still can't place *exactly* where my mystery Sicilian restaurant was. I'm getting old.

Yes the North End has changed! I still love it though.

          2. Bella Napoli! It was the best!

Really? A place called "Bella Napoli" emphasized Sicily on its neon, but not Naples?
