Oakland – Housewives Market Redux

rworange Jul 10, 2008 01:12 PM

While shopping at the Old Oakland Farmers Market recently, a stop at the Housewives Market found two changes since the last visit.

- Asian Grill replaced J. & S. Deli & Smoked Meats
- Swan’s Specialty Market “Specializing in products from Louisiana”

ASIAN GRILL

J & S replaced E J’s. With each new owner this counter gets more and more run-down looking. However, the smoked meats and odd cold cuts are still stocked. That seems to be the draw for custoers. Deli-wise it is still the same as the next link. Despite the name, there doesn’t seem to be Chinese food anymore, only deli sandwiches made by an Asian lady.

SWAN’S SPECIALTY MARKET

Don’t know if this place was there before and I just didn’t notice it. Since I stopped to smell the prepared food at this part of the farmers market, Swan's Specialty caught my eye.

It is a really oddball store. It looks like just a corner market. It was run by a Middle Eastern guy and on the window was “Read the glorious holy Qua’rn” I figured the Louisiana days were over … but no …

They have a large selection of things like moonshine syrup, cane syrup, an impressive selection of Zazaran and other dry and bottled (especially hot sauces) groceries that can be used in New Orleans cooking. I’m not quite sure if selling Mardi Gras paper towels was just a coincidence or part of the theme.

No changes to these other businesses in the market. I actually saw Jack. There were some impressive goat legs on display in the meat counter. Sunshine Café was on vacation that week but looked the same.

This seems like an apropriate place to reiterate my unconditional love for the Boudin sausage at Taylor's. Try 'em at your next barbeque/tailgate - I've yet to come across anyone who doesn't immediately love them. Just be sure to pierce the casings as they cook to avoid porksplosions.
