60th b'day in Long Beach on Sat.??

We suddenly find ourselves in charge of a small 60th b'day dinner for a somewhat curmudgeonly friend with a passion for spicy cuisine and seafood. Any suggestions in the Long Beach/South Bay area?? We need great, not overly pricy venues (we're picking up the tab, but he's, shall I say, mindful of expense, and would be mortified if we spent over $30 per person).

  1. We had a lot of fun and good eats/cocktails at the LIghthouse, in the Fisherman's village
area of Long Beach, right on the water....very reasonable. You can sit outside and have a wonderful view of the Queen Mary, and watch the boats bubbling along at the end of the L.A. river.

    1. I would suggest the Original Fish Company in Los Alamitos, if you're into seafood. They have awesome clam chowder, and their menu changes daily to accommodate the seafood deliveries. I love their salmon, swordfish, and orange roughy. They're known for not taking reservations, but if you have a large party, you should contact them direct.

      1. DEFINITELY the place you want is king's fish house. Parker's Lighthous has a view, Fish Company has a draw (why, exactly, I've never been able to figure out). King's has good, solid fish and they do well with spice (though I would definitely stick with their simpler preparations).

What about Jimmy's? I admit it's been a long time since I was there, but it used to be solid. Easier parking than Kings.

I've never understood the attraction of Original Fish Company.

i like jimmy's just fine, though it usually feels like i'm eating with my parents (and i'm already old). i thought kings because they do some cajun-y type things that really fit with spicy.

Haha! Thats what Los Alamitos feels like to me...
