MIA - Coral Gables Breakfast

lax2mia Jul 10, 2008 09:09 AM

Have a friend with a long layover at MIA and we're picking him up for breakfast. Problem is I can't think of a place near the airport that'd be good. Figured the Gables has the closest pocket of restaurants but I can't think of any that have breakfast. Any suggestions?

Gables Diner, Versailles, or Coral Bagels are my go to bkfast places.

I also like Cafe Demetrio, Le Provence on Ponce and John Martin's on Miracle Mile.

Delicias de Espana, but it's a bit further of a hike.

Are either John Martin's or Delicias de Espana open for breakfast?

Delicias is and it is fantastic!

John Martin's is open for Sunday brunch. I could have sworn I had gone on a Saturday morning but I just checked the website and it's only Sunday brunch. It's very good and the nice thing is you can take a walk down Miracle Mile afterward.

Delicias is just like it's name, delicious. Our family goes to Sunday morning breakfast at Delicias about once per month and we always order their delicious ham croquetas. It is my humble opinion that Delicias has the best ham croquetas in town. They also have the best chicken croquetas in town but you have to special order them (we order them whenever we have an excuse for a party). The actual breakfast is good (if you're up for a heavy greasy breakfast). The serrano ham they chop into the scrambled eggs distinguishes Delicias from other places. The rolls are also always good. Those are the positives. The negatives are that it gets crowded, and the service isn't consistent. Sometimes we get a fabulous waiter/waitress and other times we're lucky if we get out of there in a couple of hours! Of course for the price you really can't get any better.

Delicias has a great breakfast, nothing too fancy, but eggs, chorizo, jamon serrano, great home fries (obviously), I believe some tortillas, croquettas, etc. They also have a couple of "pots" that are pretty good. Served hot with two eggs on top that you stir in until it thickens. Dunk your bread in while you wait for it to cool. Great coffee too, btw. And if the mood strikes you, I've seen people have wine with their breakfast.

Is the Denny's on Miracle Mile still open?

La Palma restaurant off 37th avenue and Alhambra circle has a very nice, and relatively reasonable, buffet breakfast/brunch on the weekends. But I'm not sure if they offer it on the weekdays.

And if you want a simpler, traditional Spanish style breakfast, then go with the suggestion for Delicias de Espana. It is a little further, but if you have the time, worth it.

I'll third -- or fourth -- the call on Delicias. The place probably rakes in more business for their breakfasts than they do during the lunch and dinner dayparts.

Gables Diner is another earlier rec in this thread that seems to be more popular for its breakfast (at least on weekends) than the rest of the day.

And while it's not going to be the best choice, if you are stuck at MIA for breakfast, you can get a reasonable Cuban breakfast there at the La Carreta.
