Chacko's Bakery in Mission, KS?

Does anyone like Chacko's Bakery in Mission? I don't know too much about it, but one of our reps brings us baked goodies from there every time she comes. And the last time, it was honestly the best muffin I've ever tasted in my life! I was sad that I split in half with one of my co-workers! It was a raspberry muffin with a crumb topping... oh so good! Does anyone frequent it? Any favorites? I would love to have that recipe, as muffins are one thing I seem to suck at!

  1. I have been to Chacko's many times. Their cinnamon rolls are huge. Chacko's was always a big hit with my office. I have't been back since I moved out of Mission.

    1. Yeah, we're within walking distance, and it's quite good.

They've got these little creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookies that are really good, and some of their tarts (maybe chocolate peanut butter?) is a big hit with my wife. They close at 3 or something, which is too bad, because there are many times later in the day when I want to pick up a dessert for later (esp. when my wife was pregnant) and there aren't other good, close options.

They also sell bread, which is pretty good, and have a lunch menu of sandwiches, quiches, soups, and the like.

      1. We get box lunches from them sometimes for meetings/seminars at work and everyone seems to really enjoy them. I live right down the block and have stopped in once. I had a tasty cheesecake brownie but I distinctly remember the person who helped me was rather rude. I asked what a couple of items were and received very short answers and made to feel like I was stupid and being an inconvenience for asking.

We've used them for catering 2X at my office and both times they refuse to write people's names on the boxed order - and, for 40 boxed lunches, it's hard to 1. remember what you ordered from weeks prior (we order far in advance!) 2. it takes another 10 minutes out of the highly structured lunch hour.
I don't know why it's so hard to write "Alan - Tuna Salad" on the box.

That being said, the food is good and prices are reasonable. I don't think we would go out of our way for it again.

That's too bad regarding the service issues- that's one of my biggest peeves though, and would probably stop me from going back. How hard is it to be nice?!

            1. re: Katie Nell

I've been in there at least 10 times and have never had any service issues, for whatever that's worth. They're very nice, actually, in my experience.

        2. The owner is also the baking instructor at Broadmoor Technical Center for the Culinary and Baking Program. http://www.broadmoorbistro.org

I'm definitely hitting their bakesale @the school then. The cupcakes were excellent- tender crumb, tasty frosting. They had some cherry/apricot "slab" pie looking luscious that I'm getting on my next visit. I also took home some smoked chicken dip that was quite good. The service was gracious. I've got to make it in more often.

          2. We just went to Chacko's today for lunch, and I have to say, it's now one of my favorite places- might just be come a regular Saturday thing for us! I had the goat cheese salad with spiced pecans and red wine vinaigrette. It came with a roll and a dessert for like $7 or $8, or close to that. It was really great and fresh. For my dessert, I had the bourbon pecan cupcake, and it was just amazing- white cupcake with a crunchy/ chewy pecan bourbon brown sugar topping! My husband had the club sandwich which he seemed to like, but he also kept stealing bites of my salad. His dessert was the chocolate peanut butter bar and it was also extra good and rich. The service was very nice and helpful, and I'll be honest, I was being very indecisive so they could have gotten frustrated with me, but didn't- my husband sure was! I can't wait to go back!

            1. And back again. I'd have to say, that after today, I could see how some might have had a bad service experience. There was a teenage girl (a daughter?) who clearly did not want to be there and clearly did not want to be answering my questions! My goal next time is to make her crack a smile. The younger boy (her brother- Chacko?) stepped in and answered my questions when she clearly did not want to. On the upside, oh my goodness, the sour cream cherry bar might of been the best thing I've had yet! I've also loved the tuna cake salad with black beans, feta, and a chipotle vinaigrette- I'm going to try to recreate that one at home.

Okay, so the surly teenage girl is not the daughter, because the daughter was there on Saturday and she was extremely helpful and nice. The surly one was still there, although I did see her smile this time! At any rate, still liking the service and still loving the food! I can't wait for raspberry muffins!

              2. The baked goods are tasty and I'm a tough critic. I've rushed to make it by closing for a cinnamon roll many times. I can't wait to try the bourbon pecan cupcake. It sounds incredible. Lunch also sounds good. However, the staff has not been to charm school, without a doubt. They're mostly kids and I'm sure relatives. It's counter service. What can we do?

                1. I like their oatmeal raisin cookies and the cinnamon roll they call a "downtowner." It's rolled in cinnamon sugar while it's still hot instead of iced. My only complaint about Chacko's is that a lot of the baked goods are tooth achingly sweet to my taste, but I know my taste isn't the same as many Americans. Their lunch special is a great deal, and the sandwiches and salads have always been fresh. I've not had bad service there, though one teenage girl behind the counter was rather sullen. She answered my questions about ingredients competently, however, so no complaints there.

                  1. Ok kids- eating lunch there today. I love this site. It gets me out of my rut. Will let all concerned know how it was...

                    1. Well, I didn't end up there today. I called and no bourbon pecan cupcakes. Whoever answered the phone said they were something she made for Mardi Gras. She also promised to make me some on Thurs. Very pleasant and totally accomodating. See Cancun Fiesta Fresh post for today's lunch.

Their website says "Best of Bernadette's Cakes and Catering" and doesn't describe a place to have lunch?

                        1. re: KansasTravel

The website isn't really for the bakery and cafe, but rather their catering business, to all appearances. The lunch menu is different from the catering one, and I don't know that it's available online. Basically, they give you a choice of sandwich or other entree and a choice of cookie, muffin, or dessert for a set price. I believe drinks are extra, if I'm remembering accurately. I also can't remember whether they have soups, etc. Clearly, I need to run an errand in that part of town so I can have lunch there again soon!

                      2. They closed at their first Johnson Drive location, but have now opened just down the street. I LOVE their chicken salad - it's the best in the city. And their $5 individual desserts are to die for. I usually order the smallest cake with lemon curd - it's SO addictive! Yes, I found the girl on the front counter VERY RUDE at their first location. I had ordered a lemon curd cake and prepaid it. When I came back the next day to pick it up, I didn't have the receipt with me. Didn't think I needed to, since she should have written PAID on THEIR receipt. And of course, the girl I'd paid the day before wasn't there. Then she angrily told me that she plans to ASK the other girl if I paid, and if she finds out that I didn't pay....EXCUSE ME? I quit going there for a whole year or two just because of her. That was very offensive in front of the other customers. I tried to stay Johnson County with her, but obviously, she wanted to go there, instead.. Hopefully, she doesn't work at the new location. If she does, I'll ask for the owner. I'll refuse to even have her wait on me. Deliberate rudeness is always unforgiveable.
