Spotted prawns in Vancouver

I went by T&T near Chinatown today, and didn't see any spotted prawns in the tanks. Is the season over? If not, where can I get some?

  1. The season is over (I believe it ended Jun 28th??). If I'm not mistaken, you can still get them. I saw them in Chinatown just last week - both live and not-so-live. Where's Sam Salmon - knower of all things seafood - when you need him?

    1. I saw them at Great One Supermarket yesterday. $12.99 per lb. Great One is in the same mall as Chen's.

$12.99 - I'm glad I had my fill during the season. (I think the lowest I paid was $5.99).

There is a "The Great Two Supermarket" at Kingsway and 29th(?)...I wonder if they are related. If so, that could be a Spot Prawn source. I would head to Chinatown first, though. The place I saw it at was on Gore.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The so-called spot "prawn season" simply means the prawns are in abundance and thus cheaper, right? I remember seeing spot prawns (well at lease live prawns) in T&T and Chinese restaurants all the time.

They also get shipped in from Alaska during the off-season, which might account for the heftier price tag? The Lobster Man at Granville Island generally carries the Alaskan ones when our spot prawns aren't in season. ~$17.99 a pound, which seems super expensive when you're used to paying $7.99 or $9.99!

I bought prawns two or three times a week during the season...mostly form T&T, but also from the Seafood merchants in Chinatown and in Richmond.

Thanks for the replies. I will check Chinatown either this afternoon or tomorrow. And if no luck, I just might find myself in Richmond this weekend.

I think the lowest I paid last month was $9.99/lb, so $12.99 isn't too painful.
