Earlier posts allude to it, but I'm looking for a bit more detail on just what kind of crowd goes there. I've always avoided it because the Tribeca location and high prices worry me that it might be packed with loud, obnoxious Wall St dudes trying to impress each other or their dates by running up huge tabs. Not the place to explore spirits. But their list is awfully impressive, so maybe it's worth it. Or maybe there are certain nights of the week when the hedgefund types aren't around. Or maybe I'm all wrong and it's packed 7 nights a week with serious spirit enthusiasts.

dba is a favorite of mine for spirits. Solid selection, knowledgeable but unpretentious staff, good music, laid back atmosphere. But dba's selection is not as encyclopedic as BL, so thinking of going. And if anyone has another dba in their pocket, would love to hear about it. Not looking for a cocktail bar (don't get me wrong, I'm a longtime fan of Angel's Share, Milk & Honey et al), but rather bars with a focus on sipping spirits: aged rum especially, and also single malt, bourbon, rye, etc.

i think its pretty rude and misinformed to label all 'wall street dudes' as 'obnoxious' but to answer your question, its almost always a well mannered clientele. i have rarely seen any yelling or hollering either on weekdays or weekends.

from my perspective, ive seen more obnoxious people at dba...at least on the weekends.

Agreed - but the OP did not do so.

My one experience with the place was like yours and chow_gal's, by the way.

It's quite civilized and indeed a place to experience spirits. The whiskey 'sommelier' is incredibly knowledgable and gentlemanly. It is expensive, though priced appropriately for what they offer.

I have been there twice and both times were very different crowdwise. The first time there was a party for a group of JP Morgan bankers and they took up much of the space and, not to be stereotypical, but they were pretty much all as you say 'wall street dudes' and were obnoxious. They were ordering the most expensive bottles and I am sure not a one of them was appreciative of it.

The second time, it was more mellow (both nights I went were Fridays at around 9:30). It was still predominantly Wall Street (or so it seemed), but there was more of a mix in age and personality. If you know good liquor, I think this place is pretty much unbeatable. It is a more relaxed atmosphere and not loud, which is nice.

I will say this. The first time I went, my girlfriend instantly looked around and said that she was pretty much the only woman there and she was right. Now, I thought that was because there was a party. But, the second time, very few women as well. Not a place if you are looking to meet single women. For a quiet place for great liquor, it is great. The atmosphere as far as decor is a bit stuffy, but not terribly.

I found the bartenders to be much more knowledgable about liquor recommendations than the waitresses, which was somewhat annoying.
