Lunch after the Legion of Honor?

I'll be visiting the Legion of Honor in the morning. Where can a solo Chow have a great lunch between there and Union Square. I'll be using public transportation and walking. Or is there something cab-worthy? I like wine with lunch. Thanks.

  1. You might try Burma Superstar or B Star Bar (sister restaurant) on Clement/2nd. LoH entrance is around 33rd Ave. Clement street, between 2nd and 8th is a nice neighborhood and you'll find a new Chinatown and other restaurants mixed in...Q, Giorgio's Pizzeria. You could walk around and look too.

Seconded. And an easy stop off the 38 (exit 6th Street/Kaiser) and walk a few blocks north and you are there.

Burma Superstar doesn't have much of a wine list. Is B Star any better on that score?

Even wine snobs opt for Burma Superstar's version of a Sangria; light, refreshing and fabulous with whole lychee... <yum>

      2. I'd jump on the 1 bus and go to SPQR.

Troya might work. Some more options:

        1. Just did the Female Impressionists. Docent suggested India Clay Oven, 2436 Clement St, a very nice 1 mile walk through the golf course and down Clement. Buffet, $8.95, with goat curry and moist chicken and several other dishes some with mild heat.

Sorry missed your preferences in your other post.

            Wolfe-

Thanks for this. Stopped en route between deYoung and Legion of Honor today. Best Indian buffet in memory. Lamb curry today with two types of chicken, sag paneer, chana dal, rice, 2 pakoras (fish! & veggie), mixed veggie in sauce, raw veggies, green salad, raita, 2 sauces, chutney, rice pudding, those fried wheat balls in sugar syrup and the best fresh naan.

I've been visiting Indian buffets in Berkeley and Santa Rosa - this is several steps above. Good, kind, attentive service on plate clearing and water filling too.

            Appreciation!

Gee, do you remember which Indian restaurant you went to?

And those "fried [wheat] balls in sugar syrup" are Gulab Jamun which are mostly milk solids (powdered milk) with a bit of flour, butter, and milk. My favorite but technically not wheat.

Thank you, Wolfe -- missed that!

          2. I can't personally vouch for it, but as a fan of Burmese food in general I would go to Pagan if I were at the Legion of Honor--you can walk through the golf course to get there. I rarely make it to the Outer Richmond now that I live in Berkeley, but would love to try it sometime soon.

Luch after the Legion of Honor?

I'll be visiting the Women Impressionists exhibit at the Legion of Honor next week. Where can a solo Chow find a great lunch after the exhibit? I like wine with lunch and prefer European/Mediterranean cuisine. I plan to take public transportation and walk. What's on the way back to Union Square? Or what's cab-worthy. I had originally planned to Canteen again, but am open to suggestions.
              Thanks!

There was a Russian restaurant on the south side of the 2200 or 2300 block of Clement. I think soup, salad, cabbage roll and entre for around around $10. I can't say whether it's good, but the menu is in Russian & English and the customers seemed to be enjoying it. Sorry I didn't get the name.
