Quebec City Vegan/Vegetarian
My boyfriend and I will be spending a week in Quebec in February that covers the final weekend of the winter carnival. My parents will be joining us and my mother is a strict vegan. All of the Quebec restaurant recommendations in most of the threads don't seem to fit my mom's diet, and we've already warned her that she might be bringing a lot of food with her. I was hoping that between now and February I might be able to get some recommendations on places that could a) make something not on the menu (without acting like it's a major hassle), b) have at least one entree that could be easily be turned into a vegan entree or c) actually have vegan/vegetrian options (this seems to be hard to find in my search so far). The rest of us are open to whatever anyone can recommend. We could like to keep dinner mostly reasonably priced, but we will be there for Valentine's day so one higher-end recommendation would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Hi try these 3 restaurants Restaurant Zen 966 bvd René Levesque, Café Babylone 181 rue St-Vallier est, and of course Commensal 860 St-Jean. they are vegetarian not vegan but you will do fine. here are a couple of veg. stores for more variety- if you are just walking around and want to pack a lunch- it will stay cold in Québec in February. La Petite Epicerie au Cafe du Roi 980 Boul René-Lévesque, La Rosalie 1646C Chemin St-Louis. Google map them and your on your way. If you are looking for a place to staylet me know. Enjoy and bon appetit
There is NO need to be concerned - OR to make any special arrangements. Most food is actually vegan, as vegans know, it's the meat or eggs or dairy that are the minority of foods. Any real city will have plenty of options. So, I would say - get on the train and go to a real city, like Montréal...
In Montréal, you will find many places with vegan and vegetarian food.
Use the VegGuide.org listing to find some places to go out to eat:
And PETA ranks Montréal Canada's #4 city for vegans:
There are tons of amazing vegan places in Montréal. Go to Aux Vivres and Bonny's.
We are traveling to Quebec especially for the Winter Carnival. While I appreciate the advice on Montreal, we'll be lucky if we stop for lunch on our way through. My mother has been vegan for over 10 years and even living in a smaller city in western New York that is by no means a restaurant mecca, we have no problem accommodating her diet. From all of the research so far, unless she wants to eat some form of Asian cuisine every night we're there (which we have plenty of here) her options are pretty limited. Every vacation I go on I ask for advice from here and I always get wonderful recommendations.
I agree that this might be a difficult challlenge! You might want to contact the person who runs the Vegan Québec blog:
Most of the site is in French, but they have the above page in English and maybe Stéphane would be willing to help you out. I love the intro to the site: "Trouver des vegans au Québec, c’est comme chercher une aiguille dans une botte de foin. " - Finding vegans in Quebec is like finding a needle in a haystack.
The contact page is here: http://www.veganquebec.net/spip.php?a...
Vegan in Québec City is not easy... if she were vegetarian I'd suggest the nice crêperie Le Billig, but obviously crêpes include eggs and milk. A pity, as they are a great vehicle for maple syrup and don't require meat.
I do recommend you stay at a rental (self-catering) or a hotel with a kitchenette. You can certainly get a tofu/vegetable stir-fry at the many BYOW Vietnamese places in Québec, but that is no gastronomic goal.
