Pizza in Derwood (Rockville/Gaithersburg)

I just moved to Derwood and I am looking for:

--Chicago-style pizza (like Gino's East, not Unos. Giordano's would be an acceptable alternative)

--high-quality delivery pizza of any type (in particular, the kind with good cheese that doesn't leave you feeling like your nostrils are caked with grease for two hours after eating)

  1. Another impossible pizza quest.

New York is New York, Chicago is Chicago, and Derwood is...?

    1. i live in derwood. as far as i know, we have no good pizza places in it nor amazing food places. seek refuge in another town. although i'm no pizza expert so i can't recommend anything in particular to you, sorry!

      1. Zios over on Gaither Rd has the best pizza in the area, for me anyway.
I'm not familiar with the Chicago styles you reference, but its hard to beat a Zios Margehrite with sausage & green pepper anywhere in Montgomery Co.

I have to respectfully disagree. We tried Zio's a couple of months ago and it was easily the worst pizza we've ever had. We had 3 different kinds and we all agreed they were all awful. First time we've EVER thrown pizza away.

We really like the pizza from the new place in Rockville Town Square, Oro Pomodoro. It is, however, nothing like Chicago pizza.

          1. re: Lauman

I have not been is quite a while, as lots of cheese & nitrate full meat is not part of my new "heart healthy" diet.
Sorry to hear yours was so bad. I guess I should try it again prior to praising them in public.

        2. Please search the 754 previous threads on the DC board for pizza.

For Chicago style, I haven't seen anything other than Uno's and Armand's, nothing even resembling the style of Gino's/Giordano's.

For other pizza, try Mamma Lucia's on Rockville Pike in Rockville, or Giuseppi's in the new Rockville Town Center. They're reasonable facsimiles of NY-style, though not quite there. Not sure if they deliver to your address or not.

I will have to try Zio's again - my one visit there a looooong time ago was dreadful.

Yes, and even the Uno's here tastes nothing like the Uno's in Chicago. As a former Chicagoan who spent a fruitless year searching for Chicago pizza, my best advice is to a) enjoy the pizza the area has to offer even if it's different than what you're used to and b) order it directly from Chicago.

            1. re: DanielK

OK, so here is the deal as I see it.

I did what you (danielk) suggested carovina do: I searched the previous threads. And I still don't have a freakin' clue what pizza to go get. I can't tell what the pizza is like at any of these places, because at best people say "kind of like NYC style" or "closest to blah blah" which is meaningless, because even if I knew what NYC style meant to every single person on this thread, I wouldn't know how this particular pizza was different. At worst people are just doing the sports fan thing and dissin' the "other kind."

No wonder people post the same question over and over again. Maybe they are hoping someone will actually answer them.

            2. Can't speak to the heresy that is Chicago pizza, but to reiterate the other hounders, MoCo and D.C. are pizza wastelands. Mama Lucia's? Fuggedaboutdit. Zio's? Decent sauce and topings, but the crust is abysmal--thick and greasy. Giuseppi's? About as good as it gets, but that's not saying much. They can't get the crust right--too thick. Plus, they load on entirely too much cheese. Don't think any of these places deliver.

Giuseppi's definitely delivers, the question is whether they deliver to Derwood.

Mamma Lucia's (remember, Federal Plaza location is the only one worth going to) uses one of those delivery services (Waiter on the Way or Takeout Taxi, I can never remember which.)

                1. re: DanielK

oh goodness, i forgot about giuseppi's. i do love their food as they're a staple for those who went to RMHS.

                2. re: kolomya

Wow -- pizza wastelands? Harsh. I think 2 Amys and Pizzeria Paradiso are both worth the trip. Haven't tried Comet Ping Pong yet, but I've heard it's very good. And for an entirely different style, I think Vace's carryout is delicious (especially if you get it half-baked and take it the rest of the way in your oven).

                3. In Rockville there is an Armand's which has Chicago style pizza. As a native New Yorker, i wouldn't say I'm an expert on Chicago style but it was pretty good when I had it.
Now for NY style pizza in Maryland, I head to Mama Lucia (Fallsgrove).
