Ridgewood Restaurant to Avoid
Tried the newly re-opened Smith Brothers restaurant in Ridgewood last night (July 5th), 6 weeks after it re-opened post fire. The interior is still basically the same - you have to maneuver your way through the bar and its patrons to get to the opening to the restaurant side of the place, where no one seems to be in charge of seating.
Sadly there's been no improvement to the food since the last time we ventured there a few years back. While the menu seems strong, the food is undewhelming and service while friendly is a little slow and absent-minded
Orders for drinks were taken right away (a Stell and a water) but took a while to get produced. Specific instructions for our entree orders were ignored by the kitchen...simple things like well done steak fries, and mushrooms & onions on the steak didn't materialize as requested. Broccoli accompanying the meal was so overcooked it reminded me of the cafeteria lunch line product from grade school. Fries were greasy and bland. Mushrooms & Onions were delivered - also greasy...
And the food problems continued at another table as well as a calamari appetizer was delivered to a couple at a neighboring table, who then promptly received their dinner salads as well. Later in their meal a steak had to be sent back for being under-cooked and when returned to the patron was still under-cooked. They also received the grade school over cooked broccoli
Apparently the owner was absent from the premises, which surprised me, since I'd imagine a Saturday night at a bar/grill to be a busy night and worth the bosses time to hang around.
So unless you plan to stick to the bar area, skip this one.
Smith Brothers was never a culinary destination in Ridgewood.
A cold beer and a burger were all you could ever depend on. I was hoping that things would improve with the restoratuion. Oh man, they ruined the fries...not looking good.
The burger and pomme frites (they don't do fries) at Winberries Cafe around the block are better.
