Good Steak in Pasadena and something for the Pescatarians?
Our son is a dedicated carnivore and would love to have a steak dinner for his birthday (a break from Turkey and cereal). He is a student in Pasadena and we live in South Bay. We are planning on dinner in Pas. tomorrow (Sunday). We will eat fish and shellfish. I did a search and found JJ's with terrible reviews. We would like to have a great meal as we do not eat out much at all lately. So it's a big treat for all of us.
TIA

The Arroyo Chop House WITHOUT QUESTION! Ruth's Chris is a chain, JJ's is just terrible, Smitty's (owned by the same brothers as Chop house) has a couple of good steaks but its not a steakhouse, the Parkway (also owned by the Smith Brothers...they get around) might have a good steak but again, not a steak house. There used to be Monty's but alas, its gone, and it still wasn't as good as Chop House. P.S. be prepared to spend some $$.

We took our 16-year carnivore to Ruth Chris (our first visit) last week for her b'day and had an outstanding meal. I had the crab cakes which were all crab, my husband a garlic crusted halibut - both delicious. Our daughter had a filet and it was perfect. More importantly, we had outstanding service. Before we even had time to realize there was a problem, our waiter told us they had an unexpected kitchen issue and our food would be a bit delayed. Then the manager came and apologized similarly. It wasn't a bad wait at all and they comped our desserts and in general, treated us like royalty. It was one of those pivitol dining experiences when a restaurant either turns you into fan or foe. I agree JJs is $$ and mediocre. I haven't been to Chop House but friends rave about it. We love Parkway Grill, but it may not be as much of a steak emporium for your son. In any event happy birthday and hope you have fun wherever you go.

Parkway Grill has a sirloin and a filet on the menu, as well as some notable seafood dishes, including their daily seafood special.

From the same owners as Arroyo Chop house, there's also Smitty's Grill, which I think runs a bit less $$$ than the Chop House.

Arroyo Chophouse will be a treat -- Ruth's Chris is pretty pedestrian. I've never had a bad meal at Arroyo Chophouse -- although once I had weird service. I've had weird service and annoying upsell every time I've been to Ruth's Chris.
Make sure you order one (or both) of the souffles when you first sit down -- chocolate or Grand Marnier. They're both great, and I like to have a little mix of both.
There's not a *lot* of fish at the Arroyo Chophouse, but the lobster/crab entrees and scallops and shrimp starters are all good. -
