Where to find Princess Cake and/or Swedish Bakery in DC...

Hi. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to purchase a princess cake (apparently a Swedish favorite featuring strawberry jam filling and a marzipan outside) in the DC area? This would make my friends b-day. Thanks!

    1. They've had it at Ikea before. Otherwise, you are probably out of luck. I work with a Swede who loves princess cake.

        1. My Swedish girlfriend wanted a princess cake for a special occasion. We live in northern Virginia, and couldn't find any local bakeries who regularly made these, so we asked around. Amphora Bakery in Vienna and Hollin Hall Pastry Shop in Alexandria were both willing to make them. However, both said they had to replace the marzipan with fondant, and I'm not sure why.
My girlfriend says that the princess cakes at Ikea are shipped deep-frozen and not as good as the real thing (sort of like a Sara Lee cake). They'll do in a pinch, but the "real thing" is better for an event like a birthday.

Update: Just picked up our princess cake from Hollin Hall Pastry Shop. The baker took the liberty of, without notifying us, coloring the fondant pink rather than the traditional green that we asked them to use. I've no idea why they did this (presumably because it is a "princess" cake), but my girlfriend is a bit annoyed. If you are to order from this baker, I would suggest really making it clear that you want the cake's fondant to be green.

              • You could try calling the Embassy event manager. They might have a vendor on file that they use.
