Taste of Lawrence - worth going?

Royaljelly Jul 4, 2008 06:19 PM

Anyone go tonight to sample the food there? Anything worthwhile to make a trip out?

If it's anything like it was last year, I wouldn't bother. It's a nice little community event, but most of the food is unremarkable. Last year, none of the good Lawrence shawarma guys participated, which is the whole reason foodies would head out to that neighborhood. If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth a cruise, but I certainly don't think it's destination material.

Also, be prepared to have trouble finding parking if you go. Last year we drove around for a long time, asked the off-duty cop and others, and eventually gave up because the few small parking lots were full and they had temporary "no parking" signs up on every sidestreet for many blocks. I emailed ahead this year and was told to try the 25-car green P at Warden/Lawrence. Gee thanks, didn't think of that... :(

I'll stick to grabbing shawarma up there when the festival isn't on.

What about Corso Italia, is this worth going to?

Not if you're looking for great or exciting food.

IMO, the most foodie-friendly festival this weekend is Afrofest at Queen's Park. Lots of great African and Carribbean food, much of it from caterers that don't have restaurants, so you can't get it elsewhere.

Any recommendations at Afrofest? Favorite caterers or outstanding dishes?
