Looking for Best Italian in NYC

Looking for a really good italian restaurant. Possible BYO. Just great food, great bread. Not gourmet-just great chicken or pasta dishes.

I absolutely love Malatesta (corner of Washington and Christopher St) for great, simple Italian food. It is cheap, consistent, charming and delicious.

The post title is misleading. Please understand there is a huge difference between competent Italian restaurants and anything approaching the "best".

That said, I like Lupa and Pepolino.
BYO is hard to come by in NYC, unless you don't mind paying a corkage fee.

All quite good and not too pricey

Other than Crispo, I don't think the rest allow BYO.
Fyi, BYOB at Crispo was $20 per bottle and that was about 6 months ago (the last time we dined there).
