David's in Port Dover

I was very excited to hear that a fine dining place opened in this beach town not far from my hometown (where the parents live) of Simcoe. Five of us dined there this past Father's Day. When we arrived, we were stunned by the beauty of the place. If you check their website, you can see what we mean. It is located high up on the bank of Lake Erie and the grounds and restaurant/spa building are stunning. Inside we thought it would be packed (being father's day) but there were only a few other tables occupied. We got a table by the window with an incredible view and set out to order. Four of us shared apps - PEI mussels in a basil cream sauce - mussels were not overcooked, but the sauce was bland and predictable. We also shared the shrimp tempura - terrible. I've had better for under $5 in hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurants. The fifth person (not a foodie at all) had a salad which she said was good. When it came to mains, I was disappointed with the menu. The restaurant is situated on the lake - you'd think they would take advantage of this- but the only fish main was Alaskan halibut! Why fly that fish across the continent when there are great catches to be had 50 feet away?? (Knectal's down the street proves there is good fish in that lake). Anyway, my father had the halibut which came with dull basmati rice for $18. Not a terrible price, but not really worth it. I had the steak which came with a tiny piece of breaded perch (from Lake Erie) - I wished there was more perch. The steak was cooked well and frites were thin and crispy, but the perch was great. They need to be confident enough in their execution of fish to forget the "homemade" tartar sauce glob that accompanies it. Not necessary for great fish. The non-foodie had the beef medallians, which sounded rather 1980s to me - it comes with fingerling potatoes. She paired it with a riesling (?!) from Niagara which she liked. I paired my steak with a house merlot that was fine - didn't blow me away, but was good. My partner had some concoction of chicken, crab and avocado which I tasted and seemed to be the best choice. It was the special. But again, the sides were boring same old - rice or potatoes. As for dessert, it was possibly the best part of the meal. I shared a piece of key lime pie with my partner and it was fantastic. It is one of my favorites and I order it often, and this one did not disappoint. As for the bill - $200 for five people with wine and dessert is nothing to complain about. However, if I ever go again I'll likely get a burger or sandwich, wine, and dessert.
