I Have Been Recruited! (Sgt. Recruiter)

Finally made it over to Sgt Recruiter this week. I love it. The food is listed on a mirror behind the bar. Mussels, Oysters, Steak Frites, and that's basically it. Had the oysters. They were good but not Hungry Cat good. However, the wine list is wonderful! Varied, reasonable, and obviously put together by a group of people who know different and more rare varietals.
Started with a French Malbec. Who knew the French made Malbec? But the bartender told me that the French were making Malbec before the Argentineans. Then shared a bottle of Languedoc. They had this wine at Goat (same owners) and it is a favorite of mine. It is woodsy, earthy, oaky, and just so goshdarn comforting. I don't know any other way to describe it.
On my second visit (yes, I've already gone two times this week) we had a California Red wine. I can't remember the name but the bartender, Doug, steered us in the perfect direction!
The two bartenders I have encountered have been so knowledgeable, sweet, and accommodating. When my date and I showed up there was only one bar stool. Doug shot from behind the bar into the back and came out with another stool for me. They really go out of their way. For someone who does not know that much about wine they give perfect suggestions from my ignorant adjectives (earthy, woodsy, etc.)...not intimidating at all and you can tell they really love introducing other people to wine they love.
The atmosphere is right up my alley! It is tiny. Long and narrow with about 16 bar stools around a beautifully rustic copper bar. Candelabras decorate the walls with electric candles emitting a sexy orange glow. Bare light bulbs (with the metal chain dangling to turn it off and on) are in a perfect row attached to dark wood beams above the bar. It feels like you are in a turn-of-the-century converted French basement.
I've gone on a Tueday and Wednesday and it is crowded but not overly so. The crowd is a mix of aging artists and 30-somethings on dates. It also seems like a great place to go alone.
This post may sound like shill but it isn't. I just really like this place and don't know why I didn't go sooner.
The link is for Cobras and Matadors because they share the same address.

re: Das Ubergeek
Not the same as the one in Paris - but the name was taken from it.
"Mr. Arroyo, a lifelong civilian and longtime restaurateur, does not own the original Sgt. Recruiter in Paris, but that bar is a favorite of a good friend, and, Mr. Arroyo said, “I get what he likes about it.”"
