Cardamom Cafe and Bakery SD

I had breakfast here today on the invitation of Alice and in company of Angie!

I had the chorizo omelet which was filled with a jalapeno cream cheese; it was the best egg dish I have had in a long time. I scarfed it down and would definitely return for that alone. The melting [piqued with fresh hot pepper] cream cheese combined with the bolder chorizo flavor hit that sector in my cabeza that is my fondness for spicy chorizo and tangy crema sopes. Omelet was indeed fluffy. The rosemary potatoes were meh, and the multigrain toast reminded me slightly of cardboard.

Coffee was slightly over roasted for my tastes and the namesake cardamom sour cream cake was good though I thought it too heavy handed with spice. This gave it that powerful medicinal taste overuse of any sweet spice can do. I would of preferred a more nuanced cardamom flavor and I agreed with Alice that the meat of the cake was doughy, though passable with the icing.

Thanks for the company - its always a memorable meal when shared with you two.

30th and Upas in North Park. Hours are mornings and lunchtime. I haven't been yet, but hope to hit it this Sunday. This is SOOO close to us and we've been waiting close to a year for the business to open under the sign

    2. Thanks for posting about this Alex. Sadly, my North Park omelette was not nearly as good as your chorizo one, and Angie wasn't too thrilled with her french toast. It was a little dry but it did come with real maple syrup.

I think this is much needed in the neighborhood - but they'll have a hard time drawing from outside the immediate area if they don't step it up a notch or two. Hopefully things will even out and improve over time.

      1. Finally made it here this morning for the first time. I was pretty excited by the menu items, and thought the croissants looked amazing. Looks were deceiving in this case. The coffee was pretty good, but my breakfast was just average. Eggs were lukewarm, potatoes were greasy and over-seasoned, croissant was really poor - it had a good, rich buttery flavor, but the dough was leaden and it wasn't flaky in the least. I doubt I'll be back.

Too bad, I was getting syched about trying this place, usually KR is right on.

I think he was right on. He said the potatoes were meh, which they were, and the toast was like cardboard. He liked his omelet, but I didn't have one of those.

            1. re: Josh

I guess I was reffering to KR's omelet which he raved about, your post didn't have much praise for the eggs or much else, which I also respect. For me, one good omelet or drop of maple syrup doesn't make a place worth trying, at least in today's economy.
