I would reccomend Bella's on Whalley Ave, or The Pantry on Mechanic St. Both tend to have a bit of a wait on weekends though.

Bella Rosa (896 Whalley Ave.New haven, Ct.) does a great creative brunch on the weekend, their weekday breakfast menu is simpler but also good.
The Pantry (2 Mechanic St,New Haven, CT) makes great bendict's and has awesome homefries

I've had both and both are good. Perhaps Bellas Rossa's for a fancier breakfast (or more options), and on weekdays I was able to eat at the counter without any wait, for sure. They can be slow, if very busy.
Don't think I've ever waited for a spot at The Pantry. I remember good bacon....
Atticus serves breakfast. Ate there several times. The breads are the best!
Mother's is highest rated for breakfasts in "the menu" (a well-known local, restaurant guide book), for its "Jamacian breakfasts."
They mention the "Yankee Doodle Diner" on Broadway, but I think it is closed/trying to reopen?

Will try spinning around and using magical incantations!
Now, one more time for attempting to post a picture. My luck has been about 50-50 lately.
Yes, the area it's in is a little sketchy, but I don't think there is anything to worry about during daylight....
I got out of my car and walked around shooting pics with my $4,000 worth of camera and didn't get accosted. Visualize old, WAS....

I used to live in that hood and I never had any problems either. I just like to give people a heads up, so that they aren't expecting a quaint breakfast joint in some idyllic neighborhood.

Trying to get Mother's picture posted!
NOTE: I got picture posted and then the new post AND picture disappeared! I bet it returns. I think it is in the twenty minute never-never land of CH.

"The Doodle" is still closed. Where is Mother's?

Mother's is on Norton St. it is good stuff, the neighborhood is a little rough around the edges though.

I am glad to see people posting about Mother's. It isn't a pretty restaurant but everything she makes is good. They have been in N.H. for 20 years for a reason. Anyone who has not been absolutly needs to go. One of the best restaurants anywhere. The most authentic Jamaican I have had since living with Jamaicans on Nantucket in 2002.

I personally don't "get" The Pantry. I had the CA Benedict and both the tomato and avocado were mealy and flavorless. The food is diner food and no better, I'd say. I actually think the food is comparable to a place like The Educated Burgher. But some people like the vibe, I guess, or the memories or . . . I don't know, you tell me.
I like Bella's a lot though, and I love the fact that their breakfast basics - eggs, pancakes, french toast - are above average and a good deal, while their breakfast specials really are special, and cost a little more. I had a really flavorful version of "Kentucky Hot Brown" there once, and, recently I had excellent cod and crab cakes with poached eggs.
Both are a little bit of a drive. A mile or two from downtown proper.

the Pantry's homefries are what keep me going back, I also like the hollandaise. i would definitely put it well above diner food. The fact that you say "I had" sounds like you have only been there one time, true?

I ate there at least twice for breakfast. It was in 2005....but each time was excellent.

Yeah, I only ate there once. But more experienced friends don't like it either, and I haven't been able to convince anyone to go there/wait for my second attempt.

I'm not a regular, but I think the place is very good. Better than Bella's (which is consistently rated the best in the state) for the home fries and other items, but not for pancakes. Maybe it was just a bad day when you went. Avocado can be hit or miss no matter where you go, especially since people have different preferences for how ripe it should be.
Has anyone tried brunch at 116 Crown?

Geronimo's sidewalk blackboard also mentioned a Sunday Brunch . . . can't say I'm *terribly* excited, but that patio looks so darn nice . . . and (correct me if I'm wrong) there's a dearth of downtown breakfast options . . .
Have not tried 116 Crown for brunch. Have had small things there - cheese (wonderful), mussels (fine), spiced nuts (whoopsy) - and would proceed with caution . . .

Brunch at Geronimo's is great. I'll admit that, upon first looking at the menu, I was a little surprised to see anyone charging that much for huevos rancheros. But after trying them I have no complaints. Their take on eggs benedict was also great, as was the roast beef hash. The big drawback is that it's a brunch that pretty much has to be reserved for a lazy Sunday, because it's tough to pass up a glass of reposado.

It does mean "calm", after all, or in english might be confused with "repose", which sounds like what you would be doing shortly.
We went there on a Saturday for lunch and no dice. This is a Sunday buffet, and though they don't mention it, they open at noon (noon was the earliest a reservation could be made).
