Temple Grill, New Haven - worst service ever.

EastRocker Jul 2, 2008 12:32 PM

I just got back from one of the single worst dining experiences of my life. I went to Temple Grill (152 Temple St, New Haven, CT ) on my lunch break. They are close to my office which is the only reason I have continued to go there until now. I have had some pretty spotty service before but this one took the cake. I went in right at 2pm, the dining room was less than half full, and maybe another 3 tables were full outside. I ordered the smoked salmon plate. (note: smoked salmon, not a single thing on it that even needed to be cooked) and it took over an hour. Let me repeat, OVER AN HOUR. Then after I am finished, I am sitting there, now very late to get back to work, with my napkin on my plate and I have to corner the guy to get my check. And they didn't even comp my iced tea.

Wow, that's pretty awful. Waiting that long for something would ruin my meal.

It did ruin my meal. It was supposed to be a pleasant treat to myself, a break from the normal sandwich lunch. Instead it made me irritable and put me behind on my work for the rest of the day.

I once had some not-so-fresh bacon there. Underwhelmed by the food, but the space is nice . . .

I'm not sure if it's on my "must do" list anymore....

My husband and I went there about a year and a half ago for dinner. We did not have a reservation and it was a busy night, but we got a table fairly quickly (30 min. or so). Then we sat and sat until a waitress came over to take our drink order and food order. The table next to us of 8 young women who were celebrating a wedding shower were getting all her attention. Then we sat and waited 45 min. for our appetizers. Then after an hour of waiting for our entrees to show up after that, we put money on our table for what we had and walked out. (I forget what I had ordered but my husband had ordered a hamburger!) My husband called and spoke to the owner the next day and he told us to come back for a comp meal. The next time we went in, it was packed again and we just didn't feel like possibly sitting and going through the same scenario again. It's a shame, because it is a pretty cool little place and they have a nice patio area. We will only go in for drinks at the bar, if we venture in again.

I really enjoy going there, I usually get the salad where you build your own, for the most part it has always been great. sometimes the service is a little slow, but I overlook it because its my favorite place for salad.

As I noted, when I mentioned eating there during the Pilot Pen, it was OK but nothing to rave about. Service dragged a bit. Drink replacement orders were slow to come by. What I really didn't care for was the dirtiness of the floors. Whether inside or out there were significant grease trails all around.
