Just back from NY - notes on great meals
Just spent a lovely 4 days in NY running around from the theatre, to the Mets/Yankees game to a fabulous art show...and of course the food.
Here are the highlights.
Pre Theatre - went to Etcetera Etc. and had a wonderful dinner. We both found that the apps were better than the mains and could easily substitute for a main if you get two. Bests.....Prawns with chickpea puree.....octopus.....and procuitto and pancetta with melon and dates. Nice to do pre theatre dinner that is non touristy.....lovely ambiance...and very good service. Highly recommend.
Seafood/fish - Aquagrill....nice local place..not too fancy. Nice but casual.
Bests.....we both had the halibut and it was without question the best piece of halibut we'd ever had. Normally I'm not a fan...but it was done with an apple bacon vinagrette with apple, white asparagus and baby peas. I don't eat bacon so I had mine with a shallot vinagrette which was also outstanding.
Veggie place....Candle Cafe....GREAT menu for veggie and non veggies alike. House soup was yummy (yellow pea) and we both had salads...which were large and filling.
Bests - Aztec Quinoa and bean salad with cumin dressing (the dressing!!!! must make this at home!!) and the PBand J smoothie....yummmm!
See and be seen in Murray Hill.....one of my favorites...Asia de Cuba. Great service.....sleek and sexy interior. Generous portions....reasonable wine list.
Bests - Its all about the calamari salad there....probably one of the favorite dishes EVER. Calamari, shredded lettuce, banana, cashews, chayote, ...sounds odd...but TRUST me.
And the lobster was amazing...in a cocunut curry sauce....divine
Also the eggroll wrapped crab cakes...great example of the mixing of asia and cuba.
