18th Birthday Dinner in Paris (with parameters)
Bonjour! My eighteenth birthday will be this Sunday. I'll be in Paris with friends and would love to fete the occasion with a dinner. Unfortunately, it's been hard to find that perfect restaurant because the big day is on a Sunday and our budget is somewhat limited. Further complicating things, I'd rather not drag my friends to some tourist trap or stuffy old-fashioned place. I'm a budding foodie, but they're not quite as dedicated and so I'd be willing to sacrifice gastronomy for a more fun atmosphere (to a certain extent). Our budget is 40 euro/person max (including drinks). So can y'all help me find somewhere that suits these needs? If needed, the dinner can be moved to Saturday or Monday, since I know most places are closed on Sunday (my actual birthday).
Thanks so much!
PS: I'd been considering Le Dauphin, but their number is disconnected. Is it still open? Also on the table were Ze Kitchen Gallerie (on Mon or Sat night), Astier (too touristy?), Au Bascou (also not open on Sunday), and Kong or Georges at Beaubourg (out of our price range?).
I would recommend "Chez Janou" (2 rue Roger Verlomme 3eme - off the Place des Vosges). It is good well priced food and should fit your budget - and it is open on Sunday evenings.
The food is from Provence and so they have a good pastis/absinthe list - definitely something to try on an 18th. I found it was a restaurant that a lot of young Parisians went to for meals, often with large groups, and so the atmosphere is usually pretty hectic and boisterous so should work for a birthday.
I am afraid a lot of your other choices are going to be a lot more expensive than your budget. For example ZKG advertises a low cost menu, but this is only available at lunchtime, in the evening mains are €30+, and this will be generally true in a lot of restaurants. Even when there is a menu in the evening it will be €30+ as opposed to approx. €20 at lunchtime. Georges is also pretty expensive — especially for the fairly average standard of cooking.
